Winnebago looking to build off last year's campaign

Team: Winnebago

Mascot: Indians

Colors: Blue and White

Class: D-1

Head Coach: Adam James (11th season) (26-62 record)

2018 record: 3-5

Returning Starters: 5

Overview:

The Winnebago Football Team must replace some key players from last year's 3-5 team. 11th year Head coach Adam James.

"Yeah we have to replace our Quarterback and our wide receiver this year. We do have a senior stepping into that Quarterback role in Jeriah Greyowl (6'0, 140 SR QB/DB). He's been playing wide receiver for us the last 3 years as we're replacing T.J. Frenchman, who was our good quarterback that we have had starting for the last three years. Our running back Tyrese Gorrin we're replacing him with a sophomore, Javon Price (6'1, 160 SO RB/DE). Big kid that's stepping in the role and taking it to himself this summer to learn the plays and be ready for that position."

James says the Indians have a pretty heavy senior class this year which they haven't had in the past as 7 seniors are out for the team this year with 6 starting.

He looks for senior leadership to lead the team this season.

Winnebago graduated a big lineman last year in Prosper Gilpin. James says the Indians still have a few kids on the line with size.

"Yeah we do, we have a young kid, Lucian DeCora. He'll be stepping into the center position, kicking Ricky Suarez (5'9, 245 JR) out to that guard position, which Prosper was there last year. Ricky this summer worked his butt off to drop about 30 pounds and put about 20 pounds of muscle on. So kid has really transformed into a good looking football player. We also have a senior stepping in too, he's been playing tight end/running back for us in the past, but he's going to play the other guard position, and it's Marcus Harlan."

The Indians return 5 starters on both sides of the ball, and have 29 kids out for the team this year, according to Coach James.

Returning starters not already mentioned include Robbie Lovejoy (5'10, 215 SR OL/LB), JT Bass (6'2, 190 SO TE/DE), Lourde Kearnes (5'11, 145 SR WR/DB), and Ed Payer (6'1, 160 SR WR/DB).

Winnebago said goodbye to Frenchman, Gilpin, Gorrin, Raul Loera, Jamisen Wolfleader, Tobias Thomas, Joseph Huerta, Sam Farmer, Javier Nunez, Ricky Wolfe, B.J. Proctor, and Eric Caramony last year.

I think the Indians can be good again this year. Some really good players to replace for sure, but a lot of promising players coming up it sounds like.

I feel there are a lot of playmakers on the team who can do great things for this team. I think only time will tell how good they can be.

Season Outlook:

Winnebago hosts Pender in Friday's Season Opener. James says his team needs a repeat of last year to come out on top again.

"Yeah we need to get those turnovers like we did last year. I think we forced 6 turnovers last year, which really helped put our offense into gear. Our defense stepped up pretty big."

The Indians defeated the Pendragons 50-14 in Pender last year, and knocked off the Pendragons 60-42 at home the year before for their first win of the season.

Winnebago certainly has had Pender's number the past couple of years, but the Pendragons return a good core group of players as well.

Pender is also now coached by former Husker Offensive Lineman Cody Volk so you don't really know what to expect from the Pendragons per se.

The Indians just have to come out and play their game and play fearless though.

Winnebago's games were a lot closer and more competitive last year than in years past I thought, and I look for the Indians to continue to take steps in the right direction this season.

Of course Winnebago is ineligible for the playoffs being they opt down to play 8-man football.

There's still a lot to play for though in terms of pride and everything if you are the Indians though.

Winnebago has to come out and play a complete smashmouth like game against the Pendragons on Friday.

The Indians have to try and get in Pender's heads too.

I'm not suggesting trash talk, but it happens and I'm sure there will be plenty of jawing back and forth in this one.

Winnebago has to go out there and give it their all for four quarters.

Play hard for 48 minutes and find a way to win.

Winnebago has GACC, Wakefield, Lutheran High Northeast, and Wisner-Pilger later on this season, but I could see the Indians competing against those teams and finishing .500 this year.

I think a 4-4 record is a realistic and attainable goal for Winnebago for sure.

I think finishing better than last year would be another big step in the right direction for this program.

Emerson-Hubbard expecting another solid campaign

Team: Emerson-Hubbard

Mascot: Pirates

Colors: Purple and Gold

Class: D-2

Head Coach: Joe Kvidera (2nd season)

2018 record: 6-3 (lost to Allen in 1st round of Playoffs)

Returning Starters: N/A

Overview:

The Emerson-Hubbard Football Team returns a few key players on offense from last year's 6-3 team that won a District Championship and made the playoffs. Head Coach Joe Kvidera says that includes Nolan Belt.

"We've got Nolan Belt, who's back at Quarterback and Defensive Back. Last year he was an All-District Selection, he was an All-State Honorable Mention. At Quarterback he broke several of our 8-man passing records. He finished the season with almost 2,000 combined yards from scrimmage so he's definitely going to play a big, big role for us this season."

Kvidera says the Pirates also return 3-year starting offensive linemen Tyler Stark and Junior Zach Shanks as well as tight end and linebacker Hunter Schock.

He adds Anthony Lawrence and Cameron Ahlers will play a much more significant role for the team at running back and fullback, respectively.

Others expected to contribute include Sophomore lineman Garrett Blanke and Sophomore Brock Mackling.

Last year's seniors include Dylan Kneifl, Spencer Burcham, Micah Lamprecht, and Nolan Ostrand.

Some talent lost for sure, but plenty of studs back for the Purple and Gold.

Of course it's unclear whether this will be Emerson-Hubbard's last year of football as Emerson-Hubbard.

There could be a merger with Wakefield and Allen so we'll see it that indeed happens and takes place.

The Pirates just have to focus on this year though, and try and get past the first round of the playoffs.

Emerson-Hubbard perennially reaches the playoffs now it's just a matter of finding a way to win in them.

Bob Jensen of the Huskerland Prep Report adds Emerson-Hubbard is a very underrated Football team.

I would agree with Huskerland Bob on that one.

The Pirates always put a solid team on the field, and seem to find ways to have success no matter what.

And I don't think this year will be any different either.

Season Outlook:

Emerson-Hubbard opens up the season at Homer on Friday. Kvidera says that doesn't figure to be an easy game.

"I know their quarterback is back. They have some skill guys that are back. And that will be a real test for us. Guys that we're replacing are stepping up are in our skill positions so that's going to be a great first test for us."

The Pirates won last year's game in Emerson, 57-26.

Other big games come against Allen, Plainview, Pender, and Clarkson/Leigh.

Emerson-Hubbard definitely has a tough schedule and their work cut out for them this year, but there's no doubt they can be really good again.

The Pirates won the District last year, and certainly you would think have a chance to repeat those efforts this year.

Emerson-Hubbard has to come out jacked up before every game, and must get fired up and play with tons of passion, energy, enthusiasm, toughness, grit, fight, and fire.

The Pirates have to hit hard and try and create havoc and turnovers.

Emerson-Hubbard has to be not only physically tough, but mentally tough as well.

The Pirates can't take anyone lightly or for granted, and must stay healthy and avoid the injury bug this year if at all possible.

Emerson-Hubbard has to go out there and have a season they'll remember for the rest of their lives.

The Pirates can have a really special year they just have to go out and make it happen.

Kvidera says the goal is to win a playoff game this year.

I think winning a playoff game or even getting to the Quarterfinals would be a huge deal.

Emerson-Hubbard had a fantastic year last year, and there's no question they can have another similar type season.

The Pirates have to believe in one another and motivate each other and find something extra from within during the 4th quarter to find a way to win at the end of games.

Finishing in the 4th quarter and closing out opponents when given the chance could be a repeat recipe for success for Emerson-Hubbard this year.

2019 Emerson-Hubbard Pirates Football Schedule:

08/30/19 @ Homer
09/13/19 Allen
09/20/19 Plainview
09/27/19 @ Cedar Bluffs
10/04/19 @ Mead
10/11/19 Omaha Christian Academy
10/18/19 Pender

Oakland-Craig ready to reload

Team: Oakland-Craig

Mascot: Knights

Colors: Orange and White

Class: C-2

Head Coach: Joe Anderson (10th season) (75-22 record)

2018 record: 11-1 (lost to Centennial in State Semifinals)

Returning Starters: 6 offense 7 defense

Overview:

The Oakland-Craig Football Team returns 6 starters on offense and 7 on defense from last year's State Semifinal Team.

Among the returners is Wyatt Seagren. Head Coach Joe Anderson. "Wyatt Seagren (6'7, 250lbs SR) (South Dakota State FB committ) will be a big target for Colten this year. He has really made big gains in the offseason."

Colten is referring to Colten Thomsen, who takes over at Quarterback.

Other offensive returners include Jaron Meyer (5'10, 180 JR RB/DB), Tom Maline (6'0, 180 SR OL), Mike Maline (6'0, 215 JR L/L/), and. Laurence Brands (6'4, 235 SR L/L).

On the defensive side of the ball, the Knights return Meyer, Thomsen, Seagren, Caden Nelson (5'11, 180 JR FB/LB), Ian Lundquist (5'10, 170 SR FB/LB), Mike Brands (6'1, 200 JR OL/FB), and Blake Johnson (6'0, 190 SR LB).

Anderson says the defense should be excellent this year. "Defense should be a strength of our football teams. We return a really good group of LBs in Nelson, Johnson, Brands, and Lundquist."

Others likely to play this season are Coulter Thiele, (5'11, 165 JR LB), Jack Pille (5'11, 165 JR RB/DB), Gunnar Ray (5'9, 150 JR WR), and Jarron Metzler (5'10, 180 SR L/L).

Anderson adds the offense has really come together. "Offensively we have a lot more team speed this year. We feel we have multiple guys that can make big plays for us, and our OL really made big strides in the offseason."

He says Seagren has become quite the player. "Wyatt has a big frame, and really finished the season strong last year. As a TE he is a big target and also great blocker for us. As a DE he has become a really good pass rusher, and has really learned how to use his long levers to create an advantage for him."

Anderson adds Lundquist is quite the ballhawk defender. "Ian led us in tackles as a sophomore from his LB position. Last year we needed him at SS. He was still our second leading tackler. He will be back at LB this season. He has a great nose for the football. He is constantly flying around with great effort. He just makes plays. He will also have a big role in our offense next year."

Anderson says Meyer played well last year until getting injured. "Rushed for 127 yards in the first game last year, then broke his foot. Very strong, fast, and explosive, and he has a lot of big play potential on offense. He plays very physical and is one of our best tacklers. Jaron will have big play potential from either the RB or QB spot."

Anderson adds Mike Brands has lots of promise. "Moved into starting role at MLB in Week 3 and never gave it up. Big, strong kid that has a lot of potential. He is a very physical player who has a nose for the football. He will also be a big piece of our OL."

Anderson says Brands led the team with 62 tackles last year.

Anderson adds that Nelson is a solid, durable player. "Started 12 games at LB last year as a sophomore. Caden is a very smart player and understands the game. He was one of our vocal leaders out on the field. He is a very strong kid that plays very physical at the line of scrimmage."

Anderson says Nelson had 51 tackles for the team last year.

He also says Metzler will move into a starting position on the O-Line.

I look for the Knights to have a very good Oakland-Craig like year. I feel the Knights will be really good again, but feel they'll be even better next year.

Season Outlook:

Oakland-Craig looks to reload again after making the State Semifinals last year.

Anderson says this year's group of kids are very talented just like last year's. "We lost a good group of 10 seniors from last year, but return a solid group of kids who have played a lot of football and went undefeated last year in JV. Our top groups will have a chance to be pretty good, but we will not have as much depth as we had last year. We must develop that as the season goes along. Defense should be a strength of our team. Lundquist, Brands, and Johnson give us one of the better linebacker groups we have had. Seagren, Maline, Maline, and Metzler give us an experienced front 4. Thomsen and Meyer give us two experienced DB's that return. Jack Pille and Coulter Thiele got a lot of time last year. Thomsen will fill the QB spot. Brands, Brands, Maline, Maline, and Metzler (with Seagren at TE) will give us a good group up front."

The Knights open up the season at Crofton on Friday. Anderson says the Warriors and others will be tough this year. "We due lack some depth in places that we hope to develop throughout the season, as we will play a much tougher schedule this year. Crofton has everyone back and will be a very good test to open the year. They are a very physical team, so we will have to match their physicality."

Oakland-Craig plays Hartington Cedar Catholic and Ponca after that, and also has tough district games against Fremont Bergan and BRLD.

Bob Jensen of the Huskerland Prep Report.

"They leave behind some really good football players. And of course the one that got the most attention over the summer, Wyatt Seagren, had a great offseason. And he's one of those kids...he's just a monster. He's 6'7, 230, 240 whatever. And he really found that extra gear by all accounts over the summer. He's going to be a dominant player. And there's no reason that Oakland-Craig won't make another play for another semifinal. I mean you'd have to think that's true. They do it every year."

I could definitely see the Knights making the Semifinals again, but it won't be easy.

BRLD is a very good team this year, and that last regular season game figures to be just as big as last year's was.

I wouldn't be surprised if both teams were undefeated or had a total of 1 or 2 losses combined heading into that one.

That game is at BRLD this year, and the Knights have Yutan on the road the week before and Fremont Bergan at home the week before that so Oakland-Craig definitely has their work cut out for them this season.

I could see Oakland-Craig and BRLD meeting in the playoffs again, perhaps a State Semifinal to see who goes to Lincoln? Man what a treat that would be.

2019 Oakland-Craig Knights Football Schedule:

08/30/19 @ Crofton
09/06/19 Hartington Cedar Catholic
09/13/19 Ponca
09/20/19 @ Syracuse
09/27/19 @ Tekamah-Herman

Wisner-Pilger ready to take aim in 2nd year of 8-man

Team: Wisner-Pilger

Mascot: Gators

Colors: Green and White

Class: D-1

Head Coach: A.J. Burki (3rd season)

2018 record: 7-3 (lost to Creighton in 2nd round of playoffs)

Returning Starters: N/A

Overview:

The Wisner-Pilger Football team returns a lot of players from last year's 7-3 second round playoff team. Head Coach A.J. Burki says that includes Landon Beaver.

"Some of them that I think are going to contribute a little bit more and are probably going to get recognition that maybe wouldn't have. I think probably one big one will be Landon Beaver. Landon played offensive guard for us and then he rotated in providing depth at the defensive line, and this year he's come into the fall and practice these last couple of weeks and he looks really good. He's doing a nice job. I think he's probably in the best shape he's ever been. A lot stronger, a lot quicker than he's ever been. And so he's really taken over the role of offensive line leader versus last year kind of being that role player and just somebody we could depend on."

Burki says the team is also really excited about Mason Dimon and what he brings to the table.

"Another returning starter this year on offense will be Mason Dimon. He's going to help anchor the offensive line with Tyler McBride and Landon Beaver. But probably more importantly, Mason's a three-year starter on the defensive side of the ball, has a great understanding of the game, and more importantly has been kind of doing the same thing for the last couple years now."

Burki says Colby Heller and Dylan Kneifl return at tight end, Trevor Styskal at Quarterback, Justin Pieper and Gavin Lampman sharing responsibilities at running back, and Tyler McBride at Center.

The Gators parted ways with last year's seniors in Jayden Raabe, Jacob Borgelt, and Dylan Uhing.

Wisner-Pilger really didn't lose a whole lot from last year, and I think the Gators will be one of the top teams in the area and perhaps class this season.

I feel Wisner-Pilger has a chance to do a lot of great and special things this season, and go a long ways.

I think a win over GACC would make the Gators' year.

Wisner-Pilger gets both the Bluejays and Wakefield at home as District foes, and I look for the Gators to do well in both of those contests.

There's no reason to think that Wisner-Pilger can't and won't compete/challenge for the District Crown.

I could see the Gators going 7-1 or 6-2 and earning a high playoff seed, perhaps a 3 or 4? Might be too early to speculate that, but I could definitely see it happening.

Wisner-Pilger figures to be a dangerous team that not many will want to face without a doubt.

Season Outlook:

Wisner-Pilger begins their second year of 8-man this upcoming season. Burki feels his team is more prepared this year coming into their 2nd year of 8-man.

"Going into our second year of 8-man will help build confidence that I think we gained as the season went on and the boys rolled with it really well last season. But at the same time when you make that transition and you go down and you play teams that are consistently good year in and year out at 8-man, you're kind of going to another level of football. And that's actually kind of been what we've talked about all offseason and all during fall camp is just making sure that we understand we did a lot of good things last year that we're very pleased about and very happy that we were able to accomplish. But at the same time we want to maintain kind of our presence as one of those teams that people have to be worried about, and people have to think about week in and week out when they play us every Friday."

The Gators host Cross County in the season opener on Friday.

Wisner-Pilger won last year's game 50-34.

I think the Gators will be really good again this year, and wouldn't be surprised if they crushed the Cougars.

Wisner-Pilger has East Butler on the road in Week 2, and that could be a tricky game, but if the Gators can get by that game with a win then they should be undefeated heading into the matchup with the aforementioned Bluejays of GACC.

I look for the experience and veteran leadership of the Gator seniors to really stand out this year.

These kids no doubt want to go out with lots of memories made and as winners, and I think you will see that leadership on display this year.

I feel Wisner-Pilger is in great game shape and will be able to wear teams down and be very physical at the point of attack.

It sounds like the Gators should have a lot of depth this year too so it will be interesting to see how that pays off for Wisner-Pilger.

I think being the stronger 4th quarter team is going to be most important for the Gators this season.

I feel some of their games could come down to the final quarter, and so Wisner-Pilger needs to be a 4th quarter team.

The Gators should be excited about and anticipate the start of the season because it is almost finally here!!!!!

2019 Wisner-Pilger Gators Football Schedule:

09/06/19 @ East Butler

Pender looking for big things under Volk

Team: Pender

Mascot: Pendragons

Colors: Red and White

Class: D-2

Head Coach: Cody Volk (1st season)

2018 record: 4-5 (lost to Johnson-Brock in first round of playoffs)

Returning Starters: N/A

Overview:

Former Husker offensive lineman Cody Volk has taken the reigns of the Pender Football program. Volk spent a year as an assistant for the Pendragons after coming over from Battle Creek.

"Oh about 8 years ago I started coaching at Battle Creek, wrestling and football there for them. And then this last year I got into teaching, and I was an assistant under Andy Welsh here at Pender. Then Andy stepped down to take another job, and I took on the head coaching role."

Welsh took a job outside of education.

Pender returns quite a bit of talent from last year's playoff team.

"Some of our main guys we have Dylan Vogt coming back at running back. He had close to 800 yards last year running the ball while splitting carries, he's just a junior. We have Jaxon Mrsny, both those guys will be pretty big for us on the defensive side of the ball too. Up front we got Lucas Timm. He'll be starting both sides of the ball, along with Jaxon Maise, and Larry McManigal, all pretty athletic guys. We do bring back Caleb Trimble back at Quarterback as well. Which last year he was kind of thrown into the fire as a freshman, but he's put in a lot of time this summer, and really worked his tail off, and we expect big things out of him in that backfield," Volk said.

Volk says Eric Hathaway returns as well and Colton Sanderson is expected to see playing time also.

The Pendragons said goodbye to Julius Kasiske, Jaydon Jump, Jakob Cady, Sam Mailloux, and Gabriel Perez last year.

I feel Mailloux was the only real big loss from last year's team along with Jump.

Having that 6'6 frame to throw to at tight end is a definite loss, but Pender has a lot to work with given who is all back from last year's team.

I feel this year's Pendragon team will be faster, stronger, bigger, and more mobile than before.

These kids have had the better part of a year to work on their agility and other things, and I look for Pender to be very agile this season.

I feel the Pendragon players will be in great physical shape, and should be in pretty much every game they play in this year.

I think a 5-3 or maybe a 6-2 season is right about where Pender will finish, but only time will tell on that for sure.

One thing I will say though is I feel the Pendragons will be a very dangerous team come playoff time, a darkhorse you could say.

Season Outlook:

Pender opens up the season at Winnebago on Friday. Volk discusses the keys to the game from an offensive and defensive standpoint.

"Well one defensively we have to be assignment sound in everything that we're doing up there. We have to play fast, and we can't be afraid to take chances on getting a turnover. Offensively, we have to take care of the ball. We want to run the ball. And we have to be sound in our technique, we have to be cognizant of the ball, and honestly we just can't turn it over. Last year when we played them, I don't remember the exact number, but we had quite a few fumbles in that game to where watching the film we were playing pretty well with them and then all of a sudden the turnover bug hit us, and we just didn't recover mentally from it."

The Indians won last year's contest in Pender, 50-14.

Bob Jensen of the Huskerland Prep report says the Pendragons should win their fair share of games this season.

"He's in a good place. He's got some good players that are coming back. I don't know that Pender's going to be one of those teams that wins 8 or 9 games, but I think they're going to win probably 5, maybe 6. I could see them being really competitive."

The Pendragons have made the playoffs 4 years in a row.

As I mentioned in the Overview, I look for Pender to win 5 or 6 games and make the playoffs, and perhaps win a couple of games in the playoffs.

I really feel the program is in great shape with Volk as he was a Husker offensive lineman from 1999-2003.

I look for Pender to be a playoff contender this year and for years to come.

I think the Pendragons will give everyone they play this year all they can handle, and perhaps shock some teams this season.

I don't think Pender is a team people are going to want to play come the end of October.

I think Volk will have this team playing their best football at season's end and competing for a District Championship.

It should be a great ride for everyone involved and I'm really excited to see how the Pendragons do and fare this season.

It should be a memorable year for Pender nonetheless.

2019 Pender Pendragons Football Schedule:

09/20/19 Randolph
09/27/19 @ Clarkson/Leigh

BRLD expecting big season

Team: Bancroft-Rosalie-Lyons-Decatur

Mascot: Wolverines

Colors: Blue and Gold

Class: C-2

Head Coach: Dan Maresh

2018 record: 8-3 (lost to Centennial in State Quarterfinals)

Returning Starters: N/A

Overview:

Lots is expected of BRLD this season as the Wolverines return quite a few players from last year's 8-3 State Quarterfinal Playoff team. Head Coach Dan Maresh says that includes Will Gatzemeyer and Jaxon Johnson.

"We return a lot of our skill positions. It starts with Will Gatzemeyer at Quarterback and Safety for us. He's been a leader there for a long time and really excited to have him back run our offense and being back there on our defense. And then it goes Jaxon Johnson, who's been a player for us for 4 years. This will be his 4th year starting. And on the offensive side of the ball always a big target for Will, great blocker for us. And then on the defensive side of the ball he kind of stops people from running his direction."

Maresh says the Wolverines return two players on the offensive line in Luke Kramer and Tyler Vavra.

Other returners include Kobe Lyons at running back and linebacker/defensive end, Wide Receiver Lucas Vogt, and Dylan Beutler.

Maresh says senior Braxton Bargmann should see a lot of playing time as well at wide receiver and possibly cornerback.

Top newcomers include Derek Petersen and Luke Ronnfeldt, according to Coach Maresh.

The Wolverines said goodbye to Jackson Beaudette, Ryan Payton, Bradley Marr, Dustin Burgett, Nick Ronnfeldt, Mo Hawk, Seth Totten, and Nathaniel Sears last year.

I really feel like BRLD has all the pieces in place to make it down to Lincoln and win a State Championship.

These guys won state in Basketball and a lot of them finished runner-up for Pender in Legion Baseball this past summer so all that is really missing is a trip to Memorial Stadium.

I feel this is the Wolverines' year to do something.

BRLD has a lot of talent they'll be putting on the field this season, and I'm very excited to see how it all comes together for the Wolverines.

We'll see if BRLD can live up to all the hype and expectations though. I think they will, but there's lots of work to be done first.

The Wolverines have to stay humble and keep working hard week in and week out to get to where they can, should, want, and ought to be.

Season Outlook:

BRLD is looking for a spectacular campaign. Bob Jensen from the Huskerland Prep Report has the Wolverines ranked #1 in C-2, and says BRLD is loaded.

"I have a lot of faith in Will Gatzemeyer. Will Gatzemeyer to me is the biggest playmaker in C-2, maybe in all of C Football period. Kid like Jaxon Johnson is great. Anybody who saw the Vogt kid last year at State basketball realizes how hard it is to guard that kid, cover that kid. And their line's going to get a little makeover, but man they've got a lot of firepower."

BRLD opens up the season on Friday at Hartington Cedar Catholic. Maresh says that doesn't figure to be an easy game.

"We were kind of fortunate last year, they were young, and we caught them very early in the season. Were able to jump out to a big lead. Then they came on even during our game by the second half, were playing much better. And then you looked at their scores the rest of the year they really developed into a nice football team as the season went on."

The Wolverines won last year's game 48-22.

BRLD needs to start the season off fast against the Trojans, Ponca, and Crofton...their first three games of the season.

If the Wolverines can pick up wins in those three games it would make for an even more intriguing game at Norfolk Catholic on September 20th.

I feel the Wolverines have a chance to be undefeated or have 1 loss going into the Fremont Bergan and Oakland-Craig games at the end of the season.

BRLD certainly has their work cut out for them with a very daunting, challenging, and difficult schedule, but the Wolverines are up to the task of living up to and achieving expectations, there's no doubt in my mind about that.

BRLD has to come ready to play each and every week though.

Every rep during a game or in practice, every play, every snap, every down and series....they all matter.

How you practice is how you are going to play, and how you play week in and week in out ultimately defines how far you go in the playoffs in many instances.

With that said, if the Wolverines do everything in their power to control what they can control and give 110% each and every time they take to the field, then I really feel and think they will be there in the end.

West Point-Beemer looking to continue winning ways

Team: West Point-Beemer

Mascot: Cadets

Colors: Red and White

Class: C-1

Head Coach: Troy Schlueter (4th season) (20-10 record)

2018 record: 7-3 (lost to Gothenburg in 1st round of Playoffs)

Returning Starters: N/A

Overview:

The West Point-Beemer Football Team has a host of returners from last year's 7-3 playoff team. Head Coach Troy Schlueter tells KTIC Sports who some of them are.

"Some of the names that you'll probably know already are Jesus Barragan at Quarterback and Free Safety...we're expecting him to have a big year. Jesus Ramirez has been playing for a couple years. I'm expecting him to have a huge year. I don't think he's missed a weightroom in his whole high school career to be honest with you...he's a stud. Gavin Voelker's coming back...played both sides of the ball last year. Arturo Barrios, Alejandro Edeza, there's a lot of kids coming back so we're excited."

Schlueter says newcomers who could make an impact include Logan View/Scribner-Snyder Transfer Harrison Jordan, and Wayne transfer Korbin Hardenbrook, who also used to play for Pender.

He adds there are 18 or 19 returning letterwinners back from last year.

West Point-Beemer said goodbye to last year's seniors in Ben Vander Griend, Jose Salazar, Kade Hughes, Blake Anderson, Jose Alvarado, Gage Vance, Kirby Hughes, Chase Eisenhauer, Dylan Newkirk, Jakob Andreason, Luis Medina, Martin Quinones, Ethan Mayes, and Jesus Medina.

The Cadets graduated a very big and talented senior class.

West Point-Beemer has had very good teams the past couple of years, and I don't see why the Cadets can't continue that this year.

I feel West Point-Beemer has a lot of kids that no one has heard about who have a chance to do some special things this season.

I don't think the last two years for Cadet football has been a fluke, I feel the culture has really changed.

We'll find out just how far this program has come and how good West Point-Beemer is this season, but I truly believe the Cadets will be a good team.

The schedule is full of great competition, but West Point-Beemer has rose to the challenge and beaten a lot of good teams the past couple of years.

And I don't see any reason why that can't happen once again this year.

The Cadets have to be very physical and must hit hard.

I really feel the two transfers they got in will really help them out big time.

Watch out for West Point-Beemer once again this season.

Season Outlook:

West Point-Beemer is coming off back-to-back playoff appearances. Bob Jensen of the Huskerland Prep Report feels the Cadets will be a borderline playoff team this year.

"This year's team it's probably going to take a step back. I mean it's tough in a program like that to lose just killer senior classes and still have the same amount of firepower. But they're going to be good. And in large part because they believe they'll be good. There was a confidence around that program that I don't know existed prior to a couple years ago. I think they're going to be right on the edge of a playoff type team, they'll be in that mix. Probably going to have to steal a win somewhere to make it, but they'll be competitive. And that program is in a real good place right now."

West Point-Beemer opens up the season at Arlington on August 30th in action that can be heard on 107.9 the Bull. Schlueter says the Eagles return a lot of kids on offense.

"I know they return starting Quarterback, at least three other offensive linemen, they got I believe their starting tailback is back as well. I think one of the receivers is back...this is speaking offensively of course. And then I think from what I've been hearing they maybe had one of their linemen transfer out go over to Bergan. But other than that I think they got a pretty good group of linemen offensively and defensively."

The Cadets won last year's game in West Point, 39-22, and also won 39-8 in Arlington two years ago.

I feel West Point-Beemer has a great chance to win their opener for the 3rd year in a row.

I could see the Cadets going something like 4-5 this year, but I could also see West Point-Beemer making the playoffs and surprising some folks.

There are a lot of question marks and unknowns with this team I feel as you really don't know what to expect from the Cadets until you see them the first game of the year.

The opener doesn't figure to be easy given all who Arlington brings back on offense.

I think Barragan's play will be huge though, and like Coach Schlueter said....I think he'll have a big season.

He has to make plays with his legs and arms even when things are not there.

I don't know...I'm very optimistic that the Cadets can have another playoff season.

Only time will tell, but I think West Point-Beemer could make it for a 3rd straight year if they play up to their potential.

This is a team and a program on the rise, there's no doubt about it, and it wouldn't shock me one bit to see the Cadets keep the ball rolling and continue their winning ways this season.

2019 West Point-Beemer Cadets Football Schedule:

08/30/19 @ Arlington
09/06/19 Boys Town
09/13/19 Columbus Scotus
09/20/19 @ Douglas County West
09/27/19 Wahoo

10/11/19 Wayne
10/18/19 @ Pierce

GACC looking for another big year

Team: Guardian Angels Central Catholic

Mascot: Bluejays

Colors: Blue and White

Class: D-1

Head Coach: Dave Ridder (17th season)

2018 record: 9-2 (Lost to Exeter-Milligan/Friend in State Quarterfinals)

Returning Starters: N/A

Overview:

The Guardian Angels Central Catholic Football Team returns quite a few players from last year's team that went 9-2 and reached the State Quarterfinals. Head Coach Dave Ridder says the Bluejays are led by their seniors.

"Well we've got a nice senior class coming back with a strong offensive line with Mitchell Peatrowsky, Blake Pojar, Casey Doernemann, and Aaron Disher. And then at running back we have Cash Meier and Noah Hass. Quarterback we have is Cody Steffen. Another tight end we have it's going to be between Ben Ulrich and Jaryn Smeal."

Ridder says his team also has a strong defense back too.

He adds sophomores Nate Niewohner and Cole Hutchinson could make an impact this year as well.

Last year's seniors lost to graduation were Jadyn Smeal, Jared Minnick, Dylan Duhsmann, Will Kreikemeier, Tyson Snodgrass, Jack Baumert, and Nate Yosten.

The Bluejays lost star running back Jared Minnick to graduation, but Bob Jensen of the Huskerland Prep Report says the Bluejays still have plenty of horses on the team.

"You've got a proven Quarterback with Cody Steffen. And the Doernemann kid I swear to God this is like his 11th or 12th year of high school football. But he's big and strong and has a great well earned reputation. They've got some other kids that can play, especially on the defensive side of the ball. And Guardian Angels...they're going to win their district, they're going to advance to the playoffs. I think that much you can pretty much count on."

Ridder expects Steffen, Hass, and Meier to shoulder more of the load this year in place of Minnick.

I think the Bluejays will be a more complete team this year in that they will rely on a few different guys to carry them as opposed to everything going through one player when they had Minnick.

Minnick was a great player, but I think having more depth and more options in the backfield will make GACC that much better and an even tougher team.

Losing someone the caliber and with the talent of Minnick is never easy to replace, but I feel Steffen, Hass, and Meier will step up and play their roles just fine.

I look for the Bluejays to find a way to win their District again this year and make the playoffs, perhaps undefeated.

Howells-Dodge, Wisner-Pilger, and Wakefield may have something to say about that, but GACC is a pretty safe bet when it comes to picking a champion or who you think is going to win something.

Season Outlook:

GACC opens up the season on August 30th at home against East Butler. Ridder doesn't expect things to be easy against the Tigers.

"They've always been a good Football program. They were a little bit down last year, but they comeback with a lot of returning players and kids so we expect them to be very talented and very good. And then we also have several tough contests down the road."

GACC hosts Howells-Dodge the following week in action that can be heard on 107.9 the Bull, and also has District Road Games at Wisner-Pilger and Wakefield.

Ridder says the key to beating the Gators and Trojans is running the ball well.
.
Ridder adds stopping the run is also a key to making another deep playoff run, and I think the Bluejays can do just that again this season.

There are a lot of talented seniors and kids on this team as usual, and GACC should have another mighty and fine season.

The Bluejays are always good and tough, and barring any major injuries, I think you can count on GACC at least making the Quarterfinals once again this season.

The Bluejays have to execute on offense and play up to their potential on defense to be successful though.

Those games with the Jaguars, Gators, and Trojans will be major dog fights for sure, and Wakefield beat GACC last year so anything can certainly happen.

The Bluejays have to be ready to play physical, attacking, in your face football, and must be relentless with their play.

GACC has to hit hard and punish their opponents.

The Bluejays can't show any mercy to or let up against anyone at anytime.

GACC has to show teams why they are one of the best programs around, and blowout as many opponents as possible.

I think the Bluejays might have some close games this year, and feel that could help them in the playoffs if they're able to win their big and close games if they're close that is.

GACC has to practice well until the start of the season, and must be as prepared as possible for East Butler on the 30th.

2019 GACC Bluejays Football Schedule:

08/30/19 East Butler
09/06/19 Howells-Dodge
09/13/19 @ Omaha Brownell Talbot
09/27/19 @ Wisner-Pilger

Tekamah-Herman looking for good and fun year

Team: Tekamah-Herman

Mascot: Tigers

Colors: Purple and Vegas Gold

Class: C-2

Head Coach: Graig McElmuray (5th season) (4-32 record)

2018 record: 2-7

Returning Starters: 6 offense 5 defense

Overview:

The Tekamah-Herman Football Team went 2-7 last year, beating then defending state champion Yutan towards the end of the season. 5th year Head Coach Graig McElmuray says the kids put in quite a bit of work this summer.

"Our summer weightlifting program was pretty good. We had quite a few kids partake in that. We had quite a few kids with well over 20 days. I'd say about 15-20 kids that all had at least 20 days if not more."

McElmuray says the Tigers have 37 kids out for the team this year.

The Tigers return 6 starters on offense and 5 on defense.

Returning offensive starters include Wilson Anderson (5'10, 170 SO OL), Clay Beaumont (6'0, 175 SR QB), Lucas Birdsong (6'1, 240 JR OL/DL), Cole Freidel (5'10, 150 JR WR/DB), Brock Rogers (6'2, 170 WR/DB), and Luke Wakehouse (5'11, 195 SR FB/LB).

Returners on defense include Birdsong, Wakehouse, Garrison Potadle (5'11, 175 JR FB/LB), Chauncey Rogers (5'10 SR DL), and Kasey Snyder (5'9, 175 SR LB).

Others likely to play include Cole Bottger (5'8, 130 JR WR/DB), Kody Bitter (5'9, 155 SO FB/LB), Lukus Braniff (SO OL/DL), Dylan Chatt (5'6, JR WR/DB), Jordan Derra (5'10, 130 SR WR/DB), Logan Hopkins (5'8, 135 JR WR/DB), Eldridge Jensen (6'0, 160 JR QB/LB), Eli Lingle (6'2, 300 JR OL/DL), Kaleb Quick (5'10, 150 SO WR/LB), and Dawson Schram (6'0, 175 SO OL/DL).

McElmuray says Potadle is a great tackler while Freidel has great speed and Wakehouse great speed and power.

Wakehouse rushed for 500 yards in 6 games last year, according to McElmuray.

Tekamah-Herman said goodbye to last year's seniors in Mark Stark, Tristan Metzger, Brandon Schram, Tyler Petersen, Cody Elliot, Braden Ball, Gage Drummond, Jacob Jensen, Alex Skinner, Cody Arnold, Cameron Douglas, Alex Camp, Derek Conety, Kegan Tilmon, Dillon Myre, and Fox Redman.

I look for the Tigers to do well this year.

I feel this will be McElmuray's best team yet, and felt the program really made a lot of strides last year.

There's a lot of work to do over the course of the season for the team to be successful, but there's no doubt these kids are dedicated to succeeding and playing well week in and week out.

Tekamah-Herman has to believe they can win every time they take to the field and improve as much as possible over the course of the season.

Games were closer and more competitive for the Tigers last year, and I think things will be even more competitive and close this year.

Tekamah-Herman just has to let things go though, and not dwell on mistakes and let it affect their play the rest of the game.

Season Outlook:

Tekamah-Herman kicks off the season at Ponca on August 30th. McElmuray says he would like to see his team play a complete game up there this year.

"Well I think it's important that we go up there and play well. I think it's important that we go up there and do everything the right way. Think it's important for us to go up there and have a good game. Last year we let them have 4 easy touchdowns on us last year. They really only scored one touchdown that we didn't just kind of give to them as far as our feeling goes. And so as we look at that we played 3 quarters of really good football against Ponca last year, and we're ready to step up and play good football again against them."

The Indians won last year's game in Tekamah, 36-8.

Ponca is a great team, and going up there and winning is no small task.

With that said, I think the Tigers are well equipped to go up there and find a way to compete if not win.

I think the game will be close and competitive at the very least, if not a Tekamah-Herman win.

McElmuray has this preseason assessment of his team. "We will be improved again this year. Strong run game. Lost four offensive line starters to graduation."

McElmuray adds it's going to be a fun year!

Bob Jensen of the Huskerland Prep Report looks for the Tigers to turn some heads this year.

"It just feels like Tekamah-Herman's got a chance to score some points. And if you can score some points it gives you a chance to compete at a higher level. And again will they be a playoff team? That seems unlikely. But I think it's a team that's going to be much improved. And that is one program that I could see beating somebody that they quote on quote weren't supposed to."

I think there's an opportunity for quite a few wins this year for the Tigers.

I think Tekamah-Herman has the potential to have a winning season.

I don't know if the Tigers will make the playoffs as Jensen eluded to, but I think the team will be even more improved from last year.

Tekamah-Herman is a team and a program on the rise, there's no doubt about it, and this year should be a solid one for the Purple and Gold.

I'm very excited to see what the Tigers can do this season.

2019 Tekamah-Herman Tigers Football Schedule:

09/06/19 Stanton
09/13/19 @ Twin River

Stanton hoping to stay healthy and have successful playoff season

Team: Stanton

Mascot: Mustangs

Colors: Orange and Black

Class: C-2

Head Coach: David Stoddard (6th season) (24-23 career record)

2018 record: 2-7

Returning Starters: N/A

Overview:

The Stanton Football Team returns quite a few players on offense from last year's 2-7 team. Head Coach David Stoddard.

"We return two runners in the backfield...Sutton Pohlman and Gage Tighe...both started last year at wing and fullback. We've got four returning starters on the line...Mason Bruggeman, Jordan Gartner, Jackson Benson, Christian Flood, and actually Ben Wilke will be back as well depending on how we're moving with him around. Tight end last year...Trey Elbert....stepped in as a sophomore...he'll be a junior this year. And we've got other contributors on offense. Brennan Wragge has been getting some reps at running back along with Jason Claussen, Devyn Farrier."

Stoddard says there is a three-way battle for the starting QB spot right now with Parker Krusemark, Matt Reese, and Adam Arens going head-to-head.

Zak Hansen, Marcus Spotanski, Kadyn Fernau, Cade Goger, Moorghan Prusa, Nathan Arens, Alex Reese, and Sam Bates were all lost to graduation.

The Mustangs are coming off back-to-back injury riddled seasons that really hurt them I feel.

That and Stanton was young the past couple of years so we'll see what happens this year.

I feel it's imperative the Mustangs do well in non-district play to have a chance at the playoffs.

Stanton has certainly struggled the past couple of years, but I feel it's a team and a program that can get things turned around quickly and in a hurry.

I feel the Mustangs can easily get back to their winning ways if they can stay healthy and are at full strength for an entire season.

Injuries are a part of the game and affect everybody, but Stanton has been pretty beat up the last couple of years from the sounds of things.

I look for big things out of Pohlman this year.

He had a pretty big year last year if I recall, and if he can have another big season this year then I feel Stanton has a chance to be pretty dang good.

I feel an experienced line and line play will be very good and beneficial for the Mustangs this season.

I think the skill guys are all very solid too, now it's just a matter of ironing out the Quarterback situation.

Having three guys who can play QB is never a bad thing. I feel improved depth could be a strength of Stanton's this season.

Season Outlook:

Stanton is once again in a loaded District with the likes of Norfolk Catholic, Hartington Cedar Catholic, Ponca, Crofton, and Battle Creek. Stoddard says his team can't get too far ahead of themselves this year.

"A lot of those teams are going to be ranked or have a great chance to be ranked. Just seems like year in and year out you're getting a lot of great play overall from the teams in our District. And we know it's going to be a week-by-week thing. We can't look ahead to even that inside with the non-district season and the district and then hopefully a postseason run. But it is a week-by-week scenario for us."

The Mustangs open up the season at home against David City on August 30th.

Stoddard adds staying healthy is the key to having success and making the playoffs this season.

I would also say being physical up front and being aggressive at the line of scrimmage is going to be very important too.

Stanton has to play smashmouth football and also lights out defense as well.

The Mustangs have to try and make teams one dimensional and not give up big plays if at all possible.

I felt Stanton really struggled on both sides of the ball at times last year, and were just never able to gain any consistency in their play.

I think being consistently good on both sides of the ball is going to be another key to the Mustangs' success this season.

Stanton needs to explode and score points and create a lot of turnovers on defense.

The Mustangs have to be the complete package, and showcase their abilities each and every Friday night.

Stoddard said Stanton had 94% weightroom attendance this summer, and that is a very good number.

So it sounds like the Mustangs are putting in all the hard work, now they just need to go apply all that hard work to results on the football field.

Being in as good of physical shape as possible is important for Stanton too I feel.

Conditioning and endurance in the 4th quarter is what wins you games for sure.

We'll see if the Mustangs can be the last team standing at the end of games this season.

2019 Stanton Mustangs Football Schedule:

Logan View/Scribner-Snyder looking for bounce back year in C-1

Team: Logan View/Scribner-Snyder

Mascot: Raiders

Colors: Blue and Gold

Class: C-1

Head Coach: Dustin Sealey (4th season) (11-17 record)

2018 record: 1-8

Returning Starters: N/A

Overview:

Logan View/Scribner-Snyder looks to bounce back from last year's 1-8 season. Head Coach Dustin Sealey says he's excited about his quarterback this year.

I'm excited to see what Riley Hoetfelker, our Quarterback, will be able to do. Started last year as a sophomore, and he's grown physically and emotionally I think."

Sealey says a lot of his returning starters are three-year starters.

He adds there are only two kids from Scribner-Snyder on the team this year.

The Raiders lost 10 players from last year in Austin Peters, Clay Kruger, Brady Hull, Sebastian Arnold, Bailey Licht, James Hudson, Eric French, Nathan Wacker, Lucas Schneck, and Micheal Luther.

I feel Hull, Arnold, Kruger, and Peters were the biggest losses.

LVSS figures to be more experienced this year though, and I think that will help the Raiders out a lot.

I feel LVSS will be strong up front and will have good skill guys as well with almost everyone back.

I feel having the majority of the team back will pay big dividends for the Raiders, especially when going up against the tougher teams on their schedule.

LVSS has to grow and improve each and every week, and continue to get better as the season progresses.

The Raiders have to keep a level head and remain humble and be willing to work hard.

Logan View/Scribner-Snyder has to be physical, and play in your face, smashmouth football.

The Raiders have to be very aggressive, but smart in games.

A lot of games could come down to a few plays or a mistake or a smart play, and I think limiting penalties and not doing anything that could cost the team games such as a silly personal foul or something is important for LVSS to take to heart.

Speaking of heart, the Raiders have to play with tons of heart this season, and do everything their power to win each and every week.

Logan View/Scribner-Snyder has to also enjoy the ride and respect the game and enjoy their days of playing high school football.

Season Outlook:

Logan View/Scribner-Snyder opens up the season on August 30th at home against Fremont Bergan. Sealey says it's important for his kids to play well in that one.

"Bergan's a big game for us. We like playing them. It's been fun the last 3 or 4 years that I've been there. Like I said it's the first game...once you get one under your belt it kind of sets the tone for the rest of the season."

The Knights won last year's game in Fremont, 36-26.

Logan View/Scribner-Snyder lost a lot of close games last year, and I feel those close losses have a chance to turn into wins this season.

The Raiders were adjusting to a new class with a Coop and now they know what to expect this year.

LVSS gets Boone Central/Newman Grove, Columbus Scotus, and Pierce all at home this year so that should make a huge difference.

I'm not saying the Raiders are going to go undefeated and win the District Title, but I feel Logan View/Scribner-Snyder has a chance to make the playoffs this year.

I think the future, and the next couple of years in particular, are very bright for LVSS Football.

I feel last year was just a minor bump in the road, and look for the Raiders to get back to their winning ways this season.

I look for all the offseason workouts, weightlifting, and conditioning to payoff for LVSS this year.

I feel the Raiders will have a mighty fine season, and do a lot of winning and have a lot of success this year.

Logan View/Scribner-Snyder has to play up to their potential, and execute in all facets of the game week in and week out.

The Raiders have to come through in the clutch, and make big plays when it matters most.

LVSS has to play error and mistake free football as much as possible.

The Raiders also need to wrap up and tackle well throughout the course of the season to be successful, in my opinion.

2019 can be a good year for Logan View/Scribner-Snyder if all these things happen.

2019 Logan View/Scribner-Snyder Raiders Football Schedule:

08/30/19 Archbishop Bergan
09/06/19 @ North Bend Central

Clarkson/Leigh expecting good season despite losing McEvoy to torn ACL

Team: Clarkson/Leigh

Mascot: Patriots

Colors: Red, Blue, Gray

Class: D-2

Head Coach: Jim Clarkson (19th season) (93-92 career record)

2018 record: 5-4 (lost to Hartington-Newcastle in first round of playoffs)

Returning Starters: 4 offense 4 defense

Overview:

The Clarkson/Leigh Football Team will be without the services of star running back Tommy McEvoy this season as he tore his ACL in the offseason. Head Coach Jim Clarkson says that's prompted the team's starting QB to step up in practice.

"Yeah Tommy will be a big loss for us, and of course that took a little wind out of our sails. But we're starting to rebound now, and I think the kids have kind of stepped up. Quarterback Lance Paprocki has done a real nice job so far through fall camp of leading the team and kind of taking that voice over a little bit."

Clarkson looks for Issac Wiese and Carter Hanel to step up this season as well.

The Patriots return 4 starters on offense and 4 on defense from last year's playoff team.

The offensive returners are Paprocki (5'7, 140 JR QB/DB), Wiese (5'10, 150 SR RB/DB), Hanel (6'3, 195 SO TE/LB), and Layne Krutz (6'0, 270 JR OL/DL).

All but Krutz are also returning defensive starters as is Trevor Zulkoski (5'11, 180 JR OL/TE).

Others likely to play include Mitch Beeson (5'10, 200 SO OL/LB), DC West Transfer Eli Hays, Kobe Indra (5'11, 240 SR OL/DL), and Austin Sayers (6'0, 245 JR OL/DL).

The Patriots lost Travis Stanley, Douglas Pocasangre, Raoul Heillman, Cort Pokorney, and John Langhorst to graduation.

Clarkson/Leigh certainly has a lot of work to do this year given the fact they will be without McEvoy, but there's no doubt other players can step up and lead this team to a successful season.

I think the Patriots will be good, but would have been really good or great with McEvoy in the lineup.

He is a special talent, and not having him hurts without a doubt, but Clarkson/Leigh knows they will be without his services all season and have already adjusted accordingly it sounds like.

The Patriots have to work that much harder and want it even that much more knowing that he's not going to be in there.

The offensive and defensive lines have to have a good surge up front blocking for Paprocki or Wiese or Hanel or whoever, and when going up against opposing teams' backs.

Clarkson/Leigh has to be confident in their ability to have success, and must go out there and play hard for 48 minutes each and every time they take to the field on a Friday night.

The Patriots have to want it more than their opponents, and work harder than them.

Season Outlook:

Clarkson/Leigh has to have a lot of working pieces come together to be a good team this year, in my opinion.

Clarkson says the team is young and needs to perform well up front to be successful. "We return a lot of experience, but it will still be young experience. We will need to continue to improve in a lot of areas in order for us to get into the upper echelon of the class. Our depth will be improved but again it will be young depth and that may hurt at times during the season. As with any team our Offensive and Defensive line development will determine a lot in how the season will go. Opening the season with the Bacon Bowl (Howells-Dodge) hopefully will spark some extra focus in all our workouts leading up to that game."

Clarkson/Leigh battles Howells-Dodge on the road in the Bacon Bowl on August 30th. Clarkson says his kids are ready for that game.

"Yeah it's a rival. It's 6 miles away, and it's a friendly rival. And there's not a lot of hate, a lot of respect in that one, but boy we'd sure like to tack them one of these years, and we're going to give them our best shot here in a couple weeks here, so we're pretty excited for that game to be here."

The Patriots lost last year's game at home, 34-16.

The Jaguars return some good players, but so does Clarkson/Leigh.

I think McEvoy would be a game breaker and changer in this game if he were in there, and would give the Patriots a really good chance to win.

I still think Clarkson/Leigh can go in there and pick up the W, but it won't be easy without McEvoy.

Both teams have some question marks up front in terms of what they have and are looking at so it will be interesting to see which team wins that battle.

Special teams could definitely factor into the game, and Howells-Dodge has Luke Rocheford as a kick returner, and he is a real game breaker and changer.

The Patriots have to know where he is at on the field at all times, and must kick it away from him if they can.

Clarkson/Leigh's first four games are tough so we will find out what the Patriots are made of against the likes of the Jaguars, Humphrey St. Francis, Parkview Christian, and Pender.

I look for Clarkson/Leigh to go on to have a fine season and make the playoffs again despite not having the services of McEvoy.

Howells-Dodge looking for another solid campaign in 2019

Team: Howells-Dodge

Mascot: Jaguars

Colors: Green, Black, Silver

Class: D-1

Head Coach: Mike Speirs (24th season) (217-45 record)

2018 record: 7-3 (lost to GACC in 2nd round of Playoffs)

Returning Starters: 4 offense 6 defense

Overview:

The Howells-Dodge Football Team looks to build off last year's 7-3 season in which the Jaguars reached the 2nd round of the playoffs. Longtime Head Coach Mike Speirs says the offseason went really well as kids were rejuvenated by weightroom renovations.

"We had one of the better summers since in quite a few years I've been here. We were lucky our school board put some money into our weightroom and redid our weightroom. And kind of got the kids excited about it. And the kids really did a great job of responding. Our workouts were probably as good as they've been in a long, long time, and I feel like that's really going to help this fall."

The Jaguars return 4 starters on offense and 6 on defense.

The offensive starters are Darrin Pokorny (6'1, 165 SR QB/S), Trevor Schumacher (5'11, 180 SR TE/LB), Carter Throener (5'11, 220 SR G/NG), and Charlie Dvorak (5'11, 165 SR RB/DB).

Those four along with Luke Rocheford (6'1, 170 SR RB/DB) and Levi Belina (6'0, 175 SO RB/LB) return on defense.

Bob Jensen of the Huskerland Prep Report says the Jaguars return a lot of talent.

"They've got a lot of really good players coming back. And the kid that fascinates me on that team...Luke Rocheford. I'm telling you what you can't kick the ball to him. Kids that can return a kick in high school...there just aren't a lot of them. Especially an explosive playmaker, he's going to get the ball more this year. And there's a couple of kids in that sophomore class that are going to make a big difference. Probably by the end of the year going to be real impact players."

Speirs says Belina got some very valuable playing experience last year. "Levi was forced into starting due to an injury in week 4. Levi had 97 tackles while only starting 6 games. We did not use him on offense, but this fall will see an expanded role on both sides of the ball. Levi will be in the running to be our starting running back. Levi has the skills to develop into the best player on our team."

Speirs says Throener has become a really good football player. "Carter has developed into an outstanding lineman on both sides of the ball. He had 75 tackles with 4 sacks from the NG position, and should increase those numbers as we plan to move him to DE. As an offensive lineman, he became the G we tended to run behind by the end of the season."

He adds Rocheford is that do it all everything player. "Luke is without a doubt one of the top receivers I have coached. He is without a doubt, the best return man. Last year he had 3 Td's on kick returns, giving him 10 for his career. Teams stopped punting to him by the end of they year. Offensively he had 17 catches for 370yds, and 8 TDs. While not a lot by some teams standards, he did break our school record for catches. We must as coaches find ways to get Luke the ball in space, as he can be a game breaker. Defensively, we always matched Luke up against the other teams best receiver due to his outstanding coverage skills. He finished the year with 4 INT's."

Speirs says Pokorny is very valuable at the QB and Safety positions. "Darrin returns as our starting QB and Safety. As a QB he was 43-71 for 807 yds and 11 TDs. He also rushed for 446 yds on 100 carries with 7TD's. He had 97 tackles with 2 INT's defensively. He has become a team leader and we will lean on that leadership a lot this fall."

Others likely to play are Kyle Pickhinke (5'11, 290 SR OL/DL), Logan Nelson (6'2, 240 SR OL/DL), Wyatt Hegemann (6'0, 175 SR OL/LB), Trevor Jedlicka (5'6, 135 JR RB/DB), and RJ Bayer (6'1, 185 SO TE/DE)

The Jaguars must replace Dylan Horejsi at running back.

Other losses from last year include Chad Young, Josh Brester, Gaute Gunleiksrud, Lane Hegemann, Kade Hegemann, Horejsi, Mitch Yosten, Carter Jensen, and Mike Balsley.

There's a lot of talent returning for Howells-Dodge this year, and I look for the Jaguars to go on and have another fine season. I think the Jaguars will do very well once again this year.

Season Outlook:

Howells-Dodge opens up the season on August 30th at home against rival Clarkson/Leigh. Speirs says the Patriots are well coached.

"Clarkson/Leigh is a quality opponent. Their coaches are really solid coaches, and we know that we have our hands full. That they're going to kind of be able to throw a lot of stuff at us. Their coaching staff is incredibly creative, and that makes it tough the first game when you're not 100% sure which direction they're going to be taking their offense and their defense. And so we've really got to make sure our kids are prepared for everything they see."

The Jaguars won last year's Bacon Bowl 34-16.

Howells-Dodge is in a District with Lutheran High Northeast, Neligh-Oakdale, Laurel-Concord-Coleridge, Elkhorn Valley, and Madison. Speirs talks about the challenges of going up against the first three.

"Lutheran High won the district last year and they return all their skill kids. And you know that they'll be tougher than heck. Run a unique offense that gives you a lot of fits. And again they're a well coached team and very physical. Neligh-Oakdale...Coach Beacom up there heck of an offense, heck of an offensive minded coach, and return a 3-year starter at Quarterback, which is going to make them that much more tougher when the offense runs through him. Laurel-Concord-Coleridge...I think they return virtually everybody other than their quarterback, and we were in a shootout with them last year, it was a scoring battle, and those aren't the kind of games that we really want to be involved in, that's not our style."

Speirs says the Falcons will also be tough as the Jaguars won a close game over them last year, and they return quite a few kids.

Speirs has this preseason assessment of his team. "Our biggest needs going into the season are finding replacements at running back (graduated a 3 year starter) and in the offensive line, on defense it will be finding defensive ends. We return a solid nucleus of seniors, with a couple of underclassmen that gained valuable experience.  We are looking for some depth at DB to develop. Our schedule will be challenging and we must increase our overall team strength to compete. We will only have 3 Juniors on our roster, so will need freshmen and sophomores to give us depth."

Howells-Dodge will be tested early in the season against the likes of Clarkson/Leigh, GACC, and Wakefield so I think it's imperative for the Jaguars to have things figured out by the time District play rolls around.

I have no doubt Howells-Dodge will get things figured out though. The Jaguars always seem to find a way, and I don't think this year will be any different.

I'm going to say Howells-Dodge goes 6-2 or 5-3 in the regular season.
