Stanton wallops Omaha Brownell-Talbot in first game of year

The Stanton Football Team took it to Omaha Brownell-Talbot on the road Friday night, winning 67-14.

The Mustangs led 16-0 at the end of the 1st quarter and 35-0 at halftime.

Stanton extended their lead to 47 nil at the end of the 3rd quarter, and won the 4th quarter 20-14 to make up the final score.

Parker Krusemark was 3-3 passing for 93 yards and a touchdown while also rushing for 64 yards on 4 carries, and scoring once. Gage Tighe also ran the ball 7 times for 64 yards and scored once, while Jason Claussen rushed the ball 7 times for 61 yards, and scored once. Brayan Acuna had 56 yards rushing on 5 carries, and scored a touchdown, while Sutton Pohlman had 55 yards rushing on 5 carries, and scored twice. Pohlman also hauled in a 76-yard TD pass.

Tighe led the way with 8 tackles.

The Mustangs had 455 yards of total offense, including 362 rushing

The defense gave up 251 yards of total offense, including 171 through the air.

All in all a great performance by Stanton and a good win to start the year for the Mustangs.

Stanton (1-0) entertains Laurel-Concord-Coleridge (2-0) at home Friday night.

The Bears scored 22 unanswered points in a 22-14 home win over Wisner-Pilger Friday night in action aired on 107.9 the Bull.

Laurel-Concord-Coleridge appears to be the real deal this year, and the Mustangs are going to need to play very well to come away with the win.

I think Stanton will need a balanced offense and rushing attack again to be successful.

The Mustangs have to perform the way they did the first 3 quarters against the Raiders for the entire game against the Bears.

This is a battle of a couple of former 11-man teams so it will be interesting to see what happens with the two teams duking it out in 8-man action.

I think Stanton has a shot to win based on the fact that they are at home and have a lot of players just coming off of playing C-2 football.

The Mustangs have to play well and play four quarters of good football and finish the game strong, but they can definitely do it.

I think it all comes down to the 4th quarter and finishing the game though.

Stanton certainly has to save their best for last.

Wisner-Pilger loses first game of season at Laurel-Concord-Coleridge

LAUREL – It was a tale of turnovers and two different halves when Wisner-Pilger hit the road for a Friday night football match up against Laurel-Concord-Coleridge, as aired on 107.9 The Bull.

The Gators took a 14-0 lead into halftime, but were outscored 22-0 after the intermission, as LCC claimed a 22-14 victory.

Wisner-Pilger threw an interception on their opening offensive possession, but got the ball back.

The Gators were then forced to punt, LCC was turned away on a fourth down attempt, and the teams traded interceptions as the first quarter came to a close scoreless.

Wisner-Pilger started their next drive on the Bears 19 after an interception, and ended things in the end zone after a three yard scoring run by Klay Koehlmoos. The two point try was no good, and the Gators led 6-0 with 11:54 in the second quarter.

LCC punted on their next set of downs, and Wisner-Pilger took over at the LCC 35. Regan Bellar connected with Koehlmoos on a 33-yard touchdown pass, putting the Gators up 14-0 after the two-point conversion, with 8:34 left in the first half.

The teams traded punts, LCC threw an interception, and the teams traded punts again, sending the game into halftime with Wisner-Pilger leading 14-0.

LCC started the third quarter with the football on their own 15, and marched the 65 yards in just over four minutes, ending the drive on an 11 yard run by Evan Haisch. The two point try missed, and Wisner-Pilger led 14-6 with 7:58 in the third.

The Gators drove all the way down to the LCC nine yard line before being turned away on fourth down. LCC also failed to convert a fourth down try, and the same thing happened on the next possession for Wisner-Pilger.

LCC reached pay dirt again with 6:35 left in the game as Haisch scored for the second time, this being a five yard run. The two point try missed and the game was tied 14-14.

Wisner-Pilger threw their third interception of the night, and LCC took over at the Gator 21.

Haisch raced in from 21 yards for his third score of the night. The two point conversion was good, and LCC led 22-14 with 4:50 left.

The Gators had to punt on their next drive, and LCC was able to run out the remaining clock, preserving the 22-14 win.

Both teams turned the ball over three times in the game. Wisner-Pilger had three interceptions, while Laurel-Concord-Coleridge had a fumble and two interceptions.

LCC is now 2-0 on the year, while Wisner-Pilger starts off 0-1.

Tough loss and tough pill to swallow if you are the Gators.

The Gators host Wakefield  (1-0) on Friday.

The Trojans downed GACC 36-22 in the season opener this past Friday.

That's a game in which the Bluejays didn't finish, much like Wisner-Pilger against the Bears.

So the motto this week has to be finish.

The Gators have to finish games if they want to win and be successful this season.

Wisner-Pilger definitely let one get and slip away this past Friday, and the Gators have to vow to not let that happen again.

Wisner-Pilger has to come out angry, motivated, fired up, and jacked up Friday night.

The Gators have to be physical and have to be ready to hit somebody.

Wisner-Pilger has to prepare and get ready for a physical, four quarter battle with the Trojans.

The schedule is a gauntlet for the Gators this year, but Wisner-Pilger has to persevere and come out on top of these tough battles.

So far the Gators are 0 for 1, but this week is a new week.

GACC drops opener to Wakefield

WAKEFIELD – We had high school football on 107.9 The Bull Thursday night. Guardian Angels Central Catholic lost on the road to Wakefield 36-22.

Wakefield held an 8-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.

GACC started the second frame with a five-plus minute drive that ended on a four-yard run by Cash Meier to tie the game at 8-8.

The Trojans returned the ensuing kickoff for a score however, going back up 14-8. But the Bluejays used another long drive, capped off by a 24-yard scoring pass from Coy Kreikemeier to Jaryn Smeal, putting GACC up 16-14.

Wakefield would answer right back though, as they took a 22-16 lead into halftime.

GACC got the ball to start the second half and scored on its first possession, a one-yard sneak by Kreikemeier, and the game was tied at 22-22.

Wakefield outscored the Bluejays 14-0 in the fourth quarter to make up the final score.

Kreikemeier was 8-17 passing for 110 yards with a touchdown and an interception.

Nate Niewohner rushed the ball 13 times for 71 yards.

Meier made 14 tackles while Cody Steffen and Smeal had 12 and 9, respectively.

GACC had 242 yards of total offense, including 132 rushing.

The Bluejays played well for a while, but just weren't quite able to finish in the end.

Next up for GACC (0-1), they host Lourdes Central Catholic (0-1) this coming Friday.

The Knights fell 56-30 at home to Falls City Sacred Heart in their season opener.

It's a battle of two teams coming off losses to very good opponents.

Both teams will be hungry and anxious for that first win no doubt.

I think the game being in Beemer is an advantage for the Bluejays, but things won't be easy and figure to be tough.

GACC has to be tough up front, and make more plays on offense and clean up their special teams.

Some things for the Bluejays to work on for sure, but nothing they can't manage and/or overcome.

I look for GACC to bounce back in a big way this week and play well on Friday.

Let's hope the Coronavirus Pandemic doesn't alter or affect things this week.

Logan View/Scribner-Snyder looking for bounce back season

Team: Logan View/Scribner-Snyder

Mascot: Raiders

Colors: Blue and Gold

Class: C-1

Head Coach: Dustin Sealey (5th season) (11-26 record)

2019 record: 0-9

Returning Starters: N/A

Overview:

The Logan View/Scribner-Snyder Football Team looks for a lot more wins this year after going 0-9 and losing some tough, close games last year in what was an absolute brutal schedule.

Honestly I don't know if you could of had a tougher schedule than the Raiders had last year.

Logan View/Scribner-Snyder returns quite a bit of talent back this year, including the likes of seniors Andrew Cone, Brett Uhing, Dru Mueller, Garrett Palmer, Hunter McNulty, Jadin Beckwith, Jayden Korman, Keaton Bushlow, and Riley Hoetfelker along with Juniors Connor Licht, Jacob Purdy, Logan Booth, and Harrison Jordan. Sophomore Aaron Fitzke and Freshman Owen Meyer figure to have a chance to make an impact as well.

The Raiders appear as if they have some really good size up front and have some excellent skill players and playmakers.

I look for Logan View/Scribner-Snyder to be very explosive and dynamic this season.

5th year Head Coach Dustin Sealey says his team had to do without a couple of things this past offseason. "We were not able to have our positional chalk talks or play 7v7."

I'm sure the Raiders would have loved to have done that and I'm sure it would have benefited them greatly.

Still though LVSS should have a mighty fine season this year.

That's of course if we don't get shutdown by the Coronavirus Pandemic.

Everything is kind of dependent and contingent upon that.

Hopefully we can all make it through an entire football season without any interruptions, disruptions, alterations, cancellations, or postponements.

It may not happen that way, but hopefully it does.

Season Outlook:

Logan View/Scribner-Snyder figures to be much better this year than they were last year.

7 of the Raiders' 9 opponents last year finished above .500 with all but one making the playoffs, and one with a losing record was Boone Central/Newman Grove.

LVSS also lost 3 games by single digits and all but two losses were by three touchdowns or less.

The Raiders have a favorable schedule this year and figure to be poised to make a run.

Logan View/Scribner-Snyder gets 2019 State Semifinalist Wayne at home in Friday's season opener, a team the Raiders lost to just 16-0 in Wayne a year ago.

The Raiders also get BRLD and Boys Town at home.

Regardless of what happens in that first game of the season, I look for LVSS to go 6-3 at worst.

If the Raiders can pull off the upset in the opener, then it wouldn't shock me to see them run the table and go undefeated.

Wayne and Boys Town and even BRLD will be very tough though, and LVSS can't overlook teams like Arlington and Fort Calhoun either.

The Raiders have to be ready to get out there and make big plays and shine like I know they can this season.

We could very well be talking about what a difference a year makes for Logan View/Scribner-Snyder this season.

That is of course if we get through the entire season and are not shutdown by the Pandemic.

Coach Sealey says they are very satisfied with the NSAA's decision to move forward with Fall Sports. "We were definitely very thankful and ready to make the most of it."

Sealey adds the team is ready to get after things this year. "I do not know if it had anything to do with missing spring sports or or not… but this team is hungry."

The Raiders open up the season at home against the Blue Devils on August 28th.

Wisner-Pilger looks to reload

Team: Wisner-Pilger

Mascot: Gators

Colors: Green and White

Class: D-1

Head Coach: A.J. Burki (4th season) (15-13 record)

2019 record: 7-2 (lost to Creighton in 1st round of playoffs)

Returning Starters: 2 offense and 2 on defense

Overview:

The Wisner-Pilger Football Team looks to retool and reload this season.

2 starters return on each side of the ball for 4th year Head Coach A.J. Burki, and on offense they are Tyler McBride (5'11, 215 SR OL/DL) and Andrew Borgelt (5'11, 215 SR OL/DL). McBride and Marqus Eddy (5'10, 210 SR RB/LB) return on defense for the Gators.

Others likely to play include Regan Bellar (5'9, 140 SR QB/DB), Klay Koehlmoos (6'0, 185 SR RB/LB), Layne Heppner (5'9, 270 SR OL/DL), Ben McDuffee (6'2, 245 SR OL/DL), Beau Ruskamp (5'9, 145 JR QB/DB), Spencer Batenhorst (6'1, 165 JR TE/LB), Anthony Palmer (5'10, 185 JR TE/LB), and Christian Miller (5'10, 230 JR OL/DL).

It certainly appears as if the Gators have a great and lethal combination of size and speed.

Miller is a Pierce transfer, and should make a big impact for Wisner-Pilger you would think.

Coach Burki says the offseason was the same as others for the most part. "Really once we were able to get going - not a lot was different.  Probably the only thing was going to a summer team camp. We probably could have gotten to one, however, our equipment didn't get back from the reconditioning company til Early July, and then there was just so much unknown - we just decided to do our thing. Aside from that - I think more than anything the kids were just excited to get back to some sense of "normal routine" that summer conditioning and strength training provided."

Hopefully things stay normal and the pandemic doesn't interrupt, alter, disrupt, or cause the season to be cancelled.

Let's hope we get through an entire season of football, and that the coronavirus pandemic doesn't shut things down.

Season Outlook:

Wisner-Pilger looks for another big season. Coach Burki feels the pieces are in place for the Gators to do big things once again. "This year is one of the more exciting years for me/us/our team. Last year we graduated a number of seniors who played significant time over the last 3 seasons. On the other hand though - we have a big senior class, that has gotten the opportunity to see significant JV and Varsity time over the last 3 years, and now it's their turn. I think this season is not about "rebuilding" which is a term I loath, but instead "reloading".  We have a great group of Seniors (who I think will surprise people) - a small (in numbers) but very good group of Juniors, and a number of Underclassmen who are chopping at the bit to get their opportunity to play and contribute. This is what building a program is all about, - when one class leaves another steps up and takes their place to carry on the goals and traditions."

That's how dynasties are built, and that is what Wisner-Pilger is trying to build for sure.

Burki says the spotlight is on these kids in what is a season he is very happy is being played. "Beyond thrilled, for two reasons.  1.) I think again there is a sense and feeling of "normal" that goes along with fall sports being played.  2.) With everything that is and has been going on at the higher levels - all eyes are on high school sports."

Hopefully the pandemic doesn't cause games to be cancelled or the season to get called off.

Let's hope we get through an entire season with nothing bad happening, especially since Spring Sports were missed last year.

Burki says nothing is guaranteed this year, and his kids know that. "Again I think they are really excited. And with the concept of how things can change so quickly with Covid-19 (quarantining and possible lost games) we are going each day like it could be our last practice or game."

The Gators have a tough schedule, but to be the best you have to beat the best.

Having a big line should really help Wisner-Pilger out a lot.

I think the key to a successful season for the Gators, however, is their skill people and how many plays they can make, especially on offense.

Wisner-Pilger needs some gamebreakers, some explosive players who can make big plays.

If the Gators get that then it could be a very elite year for them.

Wisner-Pilger opens up the season at Laurel-Concord-Coleridge on August 28th in action that we will have for you on 107.9 the Bull.

2020 Wisner-Pilger Gators Football Schedule:

08/28/20 @ Laurel-Concord-Coleridge
09/04/20 Wakefield
09/10/20 @ Elkhorn Valley

BRLD looking to reload

Team: Bancroft-Rosalie-Lyons-Decatur

Mascot: Wolverines

Colors: Black, Blue, and Gold

Class: C-2

Head Coach: Dan Maresh (5th season) (25-16 record)

2019 record: 10-2 (lost to Sutton in State Semifinals)

Returning Starters: N/A

Overview:

The BRLD Football Team looks to build off the success they've had the past couple of years.

The Wolverines were hit hard by graduation last year, but still look to sustain the level of success they've had in recent years.

Those expected to start and/or contribute for BRLD this year include Derek Petersen (5'10, 190 SR QB/LB), who moves from OL to QB, Returning tackle leader Gus Gomez (5'10, 180 JR RB/LB), Lucas Ronnfeldt (5'11, 195 JR RB/DE), Daven Whitley (6'0, 265 SO OL/DL), Caden Hansen (5'10, 165 JR WR/DB), Returning All-State Receiver and Deep Threat Dylan Beutler (6'4, 200 WR/DB), Mason Lami (5'10, 150 SR WR/DB), Elliot Nottleman (6'0, 150 SR WR/DB), Aidan Nelson (6'2, 210 SR OL/DL), and Rusty Hardeman (6'0, 250 SR OL/DL).

The Wolverines may not have the big name players like in the past that jumped out to you, but it sounds like they have quite a few under the radar guys looking to make names for themselves.

It doesn't appear that Lucas Vogt is out for the team this year so that could hurt BRLD having one less playmaker at the wideout position.

I'm sure the Wolverines will manage and be just fine though.

Coach Maresh says his team worked and pushed through things this past offseason. "Our offseason starting in the summer went really well, the main part of our team was committed to working around the new protocols and not using that as a reason to not put in the time/effort."

BRLD, like everyone else, certainly had to adjust to everything given COVID-19, and it appears the Wolverines did that just fine.

There are more hurdles and potential road blocks ahead I am sure, but I'm willing to bet that BRLD will be up to the challenge.

That's of course if we don't get shutdown by the pandemic, which hopefully does not happen.

Season Outlook:

BRLD certainly had a great 2019 season, and will be looking for more in 2020.

A lot of kids are going to have to step up and fill various roles though as there are a lot of holes left by the departing seniors without a doubt.

Right now though the most important thing is that we are on track to play football this year as some other states aren't as fortunate as us.

Maresh says the NSAA made a great decision to let the kids play. "I think this was the best decision anyone has made in a while to get the kids some glimpse of normal and let them have that outlet and get them active and around a good support system."

I certainly agree as I am all for playing a sport if it is safe and possible.

That and the kids have been off since the end of last basketball season since Spring Sports were shutdown due to the pandemic.

Maresh says this season is going to mean something more to the Seniors. "It's going to be extra special for those seniors, they realize how quickly things can change and not to take any opportunity for granted."

This year's senior class is very grateful and thankful for the opportunity to play I am sure.

There are many disappointed kids around the nation right now, but thankfully most schools in Nebraska are on pace to play their seasons right now.

Let's hope things stay that way and that BRLD and others get to finish out their seasons this year.

The Wolverines have a very challenging schedule this year so it will be interesting to see what happens.

BRLD opens up the season at home on August 28th against Tekamah-Herman.

2020 BRLD Wolverines Football Schedule:

08/28/20 Tekamah-Herman
09/04/20 @ Oakland-Craig
09/11/20 @ Logan View/Scribner-Snyder (LVSS)
09/18/20 Yutan
09/25/20 Hartington Cedar Catholic
10/02/20 @ Ponca
10/09/20 Norfolk Catholic

Emerson-Hubbard hoping Veteran Leadership leads them to successful season

Team: Emerson-Hubbard

Mascot: Pirates

Colors: Purple and Gold

Class: D-2

Head Coach: Joe Kvidera (3rd season) (8-9 record)

2019 record: 2-6

Returning Starters: N/A

Overview:

In what will be their 2nd to last year as a program, Emerson-Hubbard looks for their seniors and veteran leadership to carry and lead them to a successful season this year.

Head Coach Joe Kvidera says his team has a couple of great leaders in the backfield and another one up front. "Zach Shanks OL/DL Senior: Zach has been starting since he was a sophomore and is an All District player from last season. He will anchor our Offensive and Defensive lines. Zach has been selected as a captain by his teammates. Brock Mackling QB/DB Junior: Brock will be our starting QB this season. He has really been able to grow into the position and has really developed the leadership skills needed for the position over the offseason.  Ryan Kinnaman RB/DB Senior: Ryan is a returning starter on both sides of the ball as well as special teams. Ryan has been selected as a captain by his teammates."

I look for these three to lead Emerson-Hubbard this year and have big seasons.

I think Mackling has a lot of potential at QB.

That is of course if the pandemic doesn't shut us down.

Kvidera says the offseason was pretty normal other than having that on their minds. "What we did for summer workouts and camp wasn't that much different really and our participation was pretty good. The biggest difference was just the knowledge in the back of your mind that it could all be over quickly. That of course is still true."

That really is true in that the season could all be over in an instant. We hope it's not and we hope things continue and progress in a positive way and manner, and ultimately everyone is going to have to do their part and be safe and social distance if we are to get through this season together okay.

Season Outlook:

Emerson-Hubbard looks for a bounce back year this year after going 2-6 and missing the playoffs last year.

Kvidera says the Pirates will be led by their Seniors. "We have seven Seniors this season, many of them returning starters. We are going to need them to step up and take on key roles and leadership this season. We have a new district this season as well and look forward to playing some teams that we haven't played in a few years."

Emerson-Hubbard is in a District with Walthill, Pender, Homer, and Allen.

Kvidera adds it's imperative his team avoids the injury bug. "The other key will be keeping guys healthy and injury free. We don't have a wealth of experience in our younger players so injuries really have the potential to derail us."

Kvidera says the fact the NSAA has decided to move forward with Fall Sports means so much. "I think everyone is cautiously excited. High school athletics and activities are such an important part of life in small town Nebraska and so many people have missed them in the last six months. Myself, and many of the people I talk to are very glad we are going to give this a try as it's so important to many people for so many reasons."

It's very important and vital to this entire area and state, in my opinion, and I'm also thrilled that we're at least going to give this season a shot and a try.

Of course there haven't been any high school sports since last Basketball season as the pandemic shutdown Spring Sports in the State.

Kvidera can't begin to tell you how thrilled, thankful, and excited everyone is to have the opportunity to play. "I don't even know how you would measure that level of excitement! It probably varies from grade to grade. Seniors I would imagine are very excited and grateful. We remind the kids every day to give everything they got and to enjoy the moment and not take it for granted. There are kids and coaches in other states where the virus just makes it too dangerous to have sports and activities so we have to relish the opportunity we have right now."

Let's hope things stay the way they are right now and that we get an entire full season.

I think Emerson-Hubbard can at least go 4-4 this year if the season is able to be played out.

The Pirates host Cedar Bluffs in the season opener on August 28th.

2020 Emerson-Hubbard Pirates Football Schedule:

08/28/20 Cedar Bluffs
09/04/20 @ Humphrey St. Francis
09/11/20 Randolph
09/18/20 @ Walthill
09/25/20 @ Winside
10/02/20 Homer
10/09/20 @ Pender
10/16/20 Allen

Pender looking for another good season

Team: Pender

Mascot: Pendragons

Colors: Red and White

Class: D-2

Head Coach: Cody Volk (2nd season)

2019 record: 4-5 (lost to Bloomfield in first round of playoffs)

Returning Starters: N/A

Overview:

The Pender Football Team looks for another good and successful season as the Pendragons boast quite a bit of talent and weapons that return from last year, plus others.

Back for 2nd year Head Coach Cody Volk is Dylan Vogt (5'11, 190 SR RB/LB), who had over 1,000 yards rushing last year, Jaxon Maise (6'2, 215 SR OG/DE), Lucas Timm (6'0, 230 SR OG/DE), Layne Sturek (5'8, 130 SR WR/CB), Evan English (5'11, 170 JR OG/LB), Alex Johnson (5'9, 145 JR WR/DE), Caleb Trimble (5'10, 155 JR QB/RB/CB), who rushed for over 700 yards last year, Jacob Bruns (5'10, 180 JR TE/LB), Chase Hofmeister (5'10, 150 JR RB/WR/CB), Colton Sanderson (6'1, 240 SO C/DT), Braxton Volk (5'11, 145 SO QB/CB), Trey Johnson (5'10, 140 SO RB/LB), Matthew Ferris (5'6, 100 SO WR/CB), Brody Krusemark (5'10, 145 FR RB/LB), Aiden Beckman (5'6, 110 FR QB/CB), Andrew Duncan (6'0, 200 FR C/DT), and Adan Godin (5'11, 230 FR OG/DT).

The Pendragons certainly have the pieces in place to make another playoff run without a doubt.

Coach Volk says the team has a lot of potential. "As a staff we excited about the upcoming season. We return our top two rushers from last year in Dylan Vogt and Caleb Trimble and return our core up front. Depth will be an issue as usual, but we are athletic across the board."

Of course that is if we don't get shutdown by the pandemic.

Volk says adjustments had to be made this offseason. "We had to be more flexible in how we approached our off-season activities. We decided as a staff to not attend any out of town team camps and focus instead internally. We had to adjust our strength and conditioning program and this meant that a lot of our young men didn’t get a chance to work out together until we had our team and conditioning camp."

Here's to hoping the full season gets played without any disruptions, cancellations, postponements, alterations, or interruptions.

Season Outlook:

The Pender Football Team figures to have a good chance to be good once again this season.

Hopefully the Pendragons get a chance to show what they can do and reach their full potential too.

Volk says he is thrilled with the NSAA's decision to move forward with Fall Sports. "Very excited that they had made this decision and we hope they continue to apply the common sense approach to the obstacles that this whole ordeal encompasses."

I will say that we in Nebraska are very lucky to have an opportunity for there to be a season as other schools in other states are not so lucky.

The Pendragons are in a District with Emerson-Hubbard, Allen, Walthill, and Homer.

Pender has a challenging schedule this year so the Pendragons definitely have their work cut out for them this season.

Volk says the kids are very hungry to get back out there after missing Spring Sports last year. "They really are motivated right now to get out there and compete in something else. Luckily we were able to have baseball for some of the boys and that helped get them back into that mode, but it will also be good to get some structure and routine again."

I look for the Pendragons to work hard and make the most of their opportunities this year.

I think Pender finds a way to go at least 4-4 again.

The challenging schedule is good for power point purposes too as the Pendragons just barely squeaked into the playoffs last year given the schedule they had.

Pender opens up the season on the road at Creighton on August 28th.

2020 Pender Pendragons Football Schedule:

08/28/20 @ Creighton
09/04/20 Randolph
09/11/20 Winside
09/18/20 @ Bloomfield
09/25/20 Allen
10/02/20 @ Walthill
10/09/20 Emerson-Hubbard
10/16/20 @ Homer

Stanton looking for success in the 8-man ranks

Team: Stanton

Mascot: Mustangs

Colors: Orange and Black

Class: D-1

Head Coach: David Stoddard (7th season) (26-30 career record)

2019 record: 2-7

Returning Starters: N/A

Overview:

The Stanton Football Team looks to find success in the 8-man ranks, as they drop from 11-man and Class C-2 to Class D-1 and 8-man.

The Mustangs bring back quite a few players, and have a lot of guys with experience, and others who will likely contribute in a big way this year.

Some of the players that Head Coach David Stoddard is counting on this year are Sutton Pohlman (6'1, 195 SR RB/FS), a 4-year starter and all-state candidate, Senior Gage Tighe, who rushed for 820 yards and 6 touchdowns and had 72 tackles last year, Trey Elbert (6'1, 185 SR TE/LB), 4-year starter and all-district performer Mason Bruggeman (6'3, 210 SR OL/DL), Jordan Gartner (6'2, 205 SR OL/DL), Brennan Wragge (5'5, 140 SR RB/DB), Parker Krusemark (6'4, 180 JR QB/DB), who had 378 yards passing and 62 tackles last year, Thomas Cunningham (6'3, 195 JR OL/DL), Jason Claussen (6'2, 170 SO RB/DB), Devyn Farrier (5'8, 150 JR RB/DB), Matt Reese (6'1, 170 SR TE/DB), Nathan Wragge (6'1, 170 SR OL/DL), Gunnar Davidson (5'8, 210 SR OL/DL), Damien Erickson (5'8, 145 JR RB/LB), transfer Kamden Dusatko (6'1, 245 JR RB/TE/LB), and Brayan Acuna (5'8, 150 JR RB/DB), the team's returning starting kicker.

Coach Stoddard says Pohlman is an extremely hard worker. "Senior Sutton Pohlman is an all-state candidate that was hurt last season, played 3 games hurt. He is an unbelievably hard worker outside of practice and spends so much extra time at the field on his own perfecting his craft. Not only is he extremely talented, his work ethic is second to none. He puts in so much extra time, it would be nice to see him recognized for all that he’s done."

Hopefully Pohlman is able to stay healthy and compete the whole time in his senior season this year. Hopefully the pandemic doesn't put a damper on this football season for the area and state.

Stoddard says they valued togetherness and made sure kids were safe and healthy this offseason. "Summer conditioning started in June and we had the opportunity for football activities in July. We took precautions daily with health screenings/questions, temperature checks, sanitizing, and practiced social distancing. With everything going on, we felt very fortunate to have those opportunities together during the summer months."

Hopefully this pandemic/these circumstances bring the Mustangs closer together and they are able to go on to have a fine season.

Season Outlook:

Stanton looks to be good this year with the drop to 8-man.

I look for the Mustangs to make the most of their opportunities this year, especially since the NSAA decided to move forward with Fall High School Sports.

Stoddard says the team is ecstatic that there's the potential for a season, and will adhere to whatever safety and precaution measures they have to this year. "We are of course thrilled and excited to have the opportunity to compete this fall. We know that there will be further restrictions and guidelines weekly, but safety is our priority. The fact that there is a possibility for a season is what we hoped for. We will do whatever it takes to have the opportunity to play football this fall."

Spring sports were of course cancelled last year due to the pandemic. Stoddard says his team is really valuing this football season. "The student-athletes are extremely excited for this season. With the loss of school and activities at the end of last year, many got a renewed sense of how important it is being around their friends, teammates, school, and community. We have a group of kids that love their teammates and football, so competing this fall is a huge reward for all the time they have invested into the program and their player development."

Just to have an opportunity to play and compete this fall is a big deal for these kids.

I'm sure Stanton will go out there and make the most of their opportunities this year.

I look for the Mustangs to make some noise in 8-man this year, and go out there and win some ball games.

North Bend Central looking for another big season

Team: North Bend Central

Mascot: Tigers

Colors: Orange and Black

Class: C-1

Head Coach: Ryan Stieren (5th season) (21-16 record)

2019 record: 9-2 (lost to BRLD in State Quarterfinals)

Returning Starters: 6 on offense and 7 on defense

Overview:

There's reason for optimism once again at North Bend Central as the Tigers bring back a host of players from last year's team that went 9-2 and reached the State Quarterfinals before losing to BRLD in an absolute thriller of a shootout we had for you on 107.9 the Bull.

Gone is QB Austin Endforf, but back for 5th year Head Coach Ryan Stieren is one of the best players in Class C-1 in Breckin Peters (6'0, 205 SR WR/MLB), Ethan Mullaly (5'8, 180 SR RB/FS), an All-District Player who broke school records, Ian Virka (6'3, 205 JR TE/MLB), Landon Krenzer (6'4, 270 SR OL/DL), Jace Owen (6'0, 285 SR OL/DL), Austin Taylor (6'1, 185 SR WR OLB), Peyton Mitties (6'0, 215 SR OL/MLB), and Allan Orellana (5'6, 160 SR WR/DB).

Other starters/those likely to play include Jarrett Poessnecker (5'9, 170 SR K), Hunter Johnston (5'9, 190 SR OL/DL), Trevor Ortmeier (6'1, 175 JR QB/OLB), Brodey Johnson (6'1, 180 JR QB/DB), Colin Rhynalds (5'11, 165 JR WR/DB), Kellen Beaver (5'7, 190 JR OL/DL), Demarius Bosveld (6'0, 210 SR OL/DL), and Kyler Hellbusch (6'1, 190 FR QB/DB).

Coach Stieren says Peters is a great player. "He is built to be an explosive athlete and has an aggressive mindset. He is also someone who prepares himself extremely well throughout each week. Offensively, every team has to have a plan for him and defensively he is a destroyer. Very high level player."

Stieren says Mullaly is a game breaker. "Ethan has the ability to break off big plays when things are not blocked up very well. His vision and balance make him a special player - we call him the Class C version of Barry Sanders. He broke our school record for rushing yards last season and should break his own record this season while also establishing the school career rushing record."

Stieren adds Virka keeps on growing. "Played outstanding on the defensive side of the ball as a sophomore last season. Offensively, we will be moving him from Running Back to a Tight End spot because he is getting so big and it puts one of our best players in the game. He is growing so fast that the Height and Weight listed."

Stieren says the team adjusted and adapted to things accordingly in the offseason. "Our offseason was very different because of all the precautions but we look at all this extra stuff that we are doing to keep kids safe as an advantage. If we can do all the right things and minimize the Virus from getting into our program, then we will be better off. I am a big believer in having our kids lift weights as a team but that got taken away from us due to limiting the number of athletes being allowed in the weight room during the summer. We worked with all our programs across the board so our boy athletes were not able to lift together and create that intense atmosphere like we have been able to in the past. But, we made the most of it and now I feel like we are pretty far along."

I think North Bend Central can be very good once again this year as long as the season isn't altered or cancelled cause of the pandemic.

Season Outlook:

The North Bend Central Tigers look for more big things in 2020 after the breakout season they had last year.

Stieren says the team has experience and talent, especially up front. "I believe we have a chance to be really solid this season. We have a lot of experience back with 12 seniors projected to be on the roster and we have 3 or 4 highly talented players that not a lot of teams have. Furthermore, our offensive/defensive lines will be as good as we have had since I have been here. The one area that people on the outside might see as a weakness is our QB position but I feel that we have 2 or 3 guys that are fighting for the starting spot and they are really good players. I believe that whoever is our Quarterback will operate at a high level."

I think when you look at North Bend Central's Schedule they could be anywhere from 5-4 to 7-2.

I feel like the Tigers have a chance to be very good once again this year, and make the playoffs.

Jumping from C-2 to C-1 is a challenge, but I feel like North Bend Central is ready for that challenge.

Stieren says he is very happy with the NSAA's decision to move forward with Fall Sports. "I really like the NSAA's approach to this situation. Allowing each school/health department to determine whether or not it is safe to play is huge because there are a lot of school districts or regions that are not very affected by the Virus so why penalize those kids. Knock on wood, but right now in our school district we are in really good shape. Obviously that can change in a hurry but we are taking every precaution possible."

Stieren adds the team is ecstatic to be able to play this year after spring sports were cancelled last year. "We are extremely thrilled for our seniors because this is something that you never get back and for them to have this experience is priceless. It takes on a new perspective because our kids now that any game on our schedule can be taken away so I feel a sense of urgency in our kids to really enjoy everyday."

As long as the Tigers stay the course and keep working hard throughout the season and stay healthy, and the pandemic doesn't interfere with things, there's no reason to think that North Bend Central won't be a playoff team once again this year.

North Bend Central opens up the season on August 28th at home against Fort Calhoun.

Tekamah-Herman looking to build off successful 2019 season with a lot back

Team: Tekamah-Herman

Mascot: Tigers

Colors: Purple and Vegas Gold

Class: C-2

Head Coach: Graig McElmuray (6th season) (7-38 record)

2019 record: 3-6

Returning Starters: 9 offense 9 defense

Overview:

The Tekamah-Herman Football Team has made a lot of strides and shown a lot of improvement the past couple of seasons.

And with 9 starters back on both sides of the ball the Tigers are looking to be even better this year.

Returners for 6th year Head Coach Graig McElmuray are Connor Feiling (6'1, 160 SR DB), Brock Rogers (6'1, 150 JR WR), Cole Bottger (5'8, 140 SR DB), Dylan Chatt (5'7, 140 SR WR/DB), Eldridge Jensen (6'1, 160 SR QB), Garrison Potadle (6'0, 165 SR LB), Kaleb Quick (5'11, 165 JR WR), Cole Freidel (5'10, 152 SR DB), Kody Bitter (5'10, 150 JR LB), Dawson Schram (6'0, 185 JR OL), Lucas Birdsong (6'1, 195 SR OL), Wilson Anderson (5'9, 165 JR OL), Eli Lingle (6'2, 290 SR OL), and Logan Hopkins (5'8, 135 SR DB).

Luke Wakehouse is a key loss from last year for the Tigers, and Tekamah-Herman will need to find people to replace him and Clay Beaumont in particular.

Coach McElmuray says the pieces are in place for that to happen. "Our Offensive Line should help us fill any gaps with Wakehouse and Beumont leaving. It is going to be a fun year I feel our schedule is brutal but I think that we are going to have a fun season. Bitter and Logan BurtI (SO) will fill in for Wakehouse. Eldridge Jensen and Brock Rogers will fight it out to be Starting QB. We have a lot of talent coming back. It could be one of the deeper teams we have had at every position."

Of course everything depends on the pandemic and if we get through an entire season of football.

McElmuray says the summer was pretty simple. "It was nice to have June just to focus on Small Groups in the weight room and on the track for strength and conditioning. We didn't have near as much "football" time but with the returners I have and keeping the system the same we really have picked right back up with our late season form.  9 starters on Defense and 8-9 on Offense really made this a simple summer."

I think all the returners the Tigers have back plus the success they've had the past couple years gives them an opportunity to improve upon their 3-6 record last year, and continue to build on the positive things they have done of the course of the last two seasons.

Season Outlook:

Tekamah-Herman looks to continue to take steps in the right direction after two successful campaigns the last two seasons.

I really think the Tigers have a shot to win their first two games of the season and finish this year at least 4-5 at the very least.

Tekamah-Herman is in District C2-2 with Oakland-Craig, Fremont Bergan, David City Aquinas, and David City.

Let's hope the pandemic doesn't throw a wrench and fork into things.

McElmuray says he is glad we're playing, but has some concerns. "Really happy with the NSAA. I am uneasy about the entire quarantine aspect, leaving it in the school's discretion. The NSAA did the right thing I am just concerned with the decisions that each local district and the health departments to make."

I would just say at this point that we all ought to be thankful that we are on schedule to have a season.

McElmuray says the kids are making the most of this opportunity and then some. "Our young men know that this season could be quickly taken away, so they are enjoying practice and I have not had a group of young men that just hang out at the field house after practice like they do. I must kick them out to go home."

That's quite honestly what it takes to be successful, and it appears as if the Tigers are figuring that out if they haven't already.

Tekamah-Herman is slowly getting better and on the brink of becoming a winning football team, and if they can go at least 4-5 this year I feel it will be another positive step in the right direction.

The Tigers ought to shoot and aim for higher than that, but if 4-5 is what their record is this year then I will look at it as progress and a successful season.

Tekamah-Herman opens up the season at BRLD on August 28th, and that could be a very interesting an intriguing game, in my opinion.

2020 Tekamah-Herman Tigers Football Schedule:

08/28/20 @ BRLD
09/04/20 Ponca
09/11/20 @ Hartington Cedar Catholic
09/18/20 Bishop Neumann
09/25/20 @ Crofton

Oakland-Craig looking to defend C-2 Crown

Team: Oakland-Craig

Mascot: Knights

Colors: Orange and White

Class: C-2

Head Coach: Joe Anderson (11th season) (88-22 record)

2019 record: 13-0 (won C-2 State Championship)

Returning Starters: 6 offense 7 defense

Overview:

What will the Oakland-Craig Football Team do for an encore this year? You couldn't get any more dominate than the Knights were last year.

Oakland-Craig steamrolled the majority of the teams they played last year on their way to the C-2 State Title.

The Knights return 6 starters on offense and 7 on defense just like last year.

Returning on both sides of the ball for Head Coach Joe Anderson is Jaron Meyer (5'11, 175 SR RB/DE), who had 1,143 rushing yards last year, Mike Brands (6'2, 210 SR L/LB), Caden Nelson (6'1, 200 SR FB/LB), Coulter Thiele (6'0, 170 SR WB/DB), Mike Maline (6'1, 240 SR L/L), and Jack Pille (5'11, 170 SR WR/DB). Trey Deemer (6'0, 165 SR WR/DB) also returns on defense for the defending state champs.

Others likely to play include Grady Gatewood (5'10, 160 JR QB), Gunnar Ray (5'10, 160 JR WR/DB), Carson Thomsen (5'11, 165 JR WR/DB), Jaden Harney (5'11, 200 SR L/L), Alec Mockenhaupt (5'10, 190 SR L/L), Tavis Uhing (5'10, 170 JR RB/DB), Connor Guill (5'10, 165 JR WB/LB), Elliot Johnson (6'0, 190 JR L/L), Gavin Enstrom (5'10, 160 SR WR), Ryan Smith (6'0, 240 JR L/L), and Dawson Rhoades (6'0, 185 JR LB).

It certainly appears as if the Knights return a lot of talent and have really good depth at quite a few positions.

Coach Anderson says Brands is an all around great football player. "A prototypical Middle linebacker. Big and physical and hard hitting, he plays with a great motor which allows him to play sideline to sideline. Was our leading tackler last year. Also a very good OL, who is very quick off the football."

Anderson says Nelson is just about as valuable. "Another big, physical LB. Caden was our 2nd leading tackler. Caden plays downhill and brings a big pop. He is a very smart player who get us into all of our checks. On offense, he plays some WR but also lines up and plays a very punishing FB. Great lead blocker and good runner as well. (315 yards rushing, 347 yards receiving, 15 TD)"

Anderson says Meyer is a tough customer and very productive player. "Very explosive athlete that made a lot of big plays last year. (played last 7 games with a broken thumb as well). Has a combination of great speed, balance and power. Averaged 11.5 yards per carry. (for 1,143 yards and 14 TD). On defense he is a ballhawk as well, getting 4 INT."

Anderson adds Thiele is solid on both sides of the ball. "Very versatile athlete in our offense. Has great speed which allowed him to rush for 594 yards and have 478 yards receiving for a combined 16 TD. On defense he turned into a lock down corner. Picking off 5 passes. Also plays very physical on both sides of the ball."

Anderson says Maline leads the way up front. "Big, Strong kid that get gets off the football well. Physical player that was requiring a double team toward the end of last season on defense. Offensively Michael creates a great line surge for us. Was a 2 way starter last year on both lines."

Anderson adds Pille could be an under the radar surprise guy this year. "Jack Pille could also fit into this group. He missed all of last season due to a torn ACL. He may be our best overall athlete. He placed in both hurdle events as a sophomore. Should give us another weapon on offense, and a very good cover guy on defense. He also was our kicker as a sophomore, so that is something we really missed last year."

Of course this is all dependent on the pandemic not factoring into or altering things.

Season Outlook:

Oakland-Craig looks to reload after going 13-0 and winning the C-2 State Championship last year.

Anderson says his team brings a lot of experience back. "We return a very talented group of seniors that all played important role last year. Jaron Meyer (all-state) will give us a big play threat at our running back spot. He averaged 11.5 ypc. Coulter Thiele and the return of Jack Pille (missed last season with an ACL) will give us a lot of speed at our two wing positions. Caden Nelson is a multi-talented guy who plays FB and WR. He excelled at both last year. Gunnar Ray, Trey Deemer, and Carson Thomsen will give us quality depth at WR. Tavis Uhing also will give us depth at the RB position as he had a very solid year last year in a backup role."

Anderson commented on the QB situation. "Grady Gatewood will most likely take over at QB. He led a comeback in the 1st round of the playoffs and quarterbacked us to a big win in the quarterfinals. (was 18-22 for 211 yds 4 TD for the season). Also led us to an undefeated JV schedule. "

He adds there are some question marks up front. "In the line is where we will have to develop some depth. Mike Brands and Mike Maline both return. Both are all-state Caliber lineman. After that Elliot Johnson, Jaden Harney, Alec Mockenhaupt, Keenan Brown, Ryan Smith and freshman JT Brands (6’0 215 pounds) should give us quality options."

Anderson says the defense should be top notch once again. "Defense should be a strength of our team again. Our LB core will be very good again. Mike Brands and Caden Nelson were both all-state last year (could be one of the best LB duo in O-C history). Tavis Uhing, and Connor Guill and Dawson Rhoades  will add quality depth there. Defensive back should we very solid. Pille, Meyer, Deemer and Thiele give us 4 seniors with a lot of athleticism and experience back there. Thomsen and Ray give us quality depth. Defensive line is where we will have to find some capable bodies. Mike Maline will anchor from his DT position. After that it will be a battle for playing time between the guys I mentioned for the OL spots."

I think Oakland-Craig can go undefeated in the regular season again if their offense can find the same explosion they had last year.

Anderson says a lot hinges on the offensive and defensive lines. "Our schedule will be challenging this year. How successful we are will depend a lot on how well our lines develop on both sides of the football. If our line develops we will have a lot of speed guys capable of making plays behind them."

Games with BRLD, Norfolk Catholic, David City Aquinas, Fremont Bergan, and Hartington Cedar Catholic figure to be the toughest battles on the schedule for O-C.

I think Oakland-Craig can be dominate again this year, but only time will tell.

The Knights open up the season at Ponca on August 28th.

2020 Oakland-Craig Knights Football Schedule:

08/28/20 @ Ponca

West Point-Beemer hoping returning experience yields another big season

Team: West Point-Beemer

Mascot: Cadets

Colors: Red and White

Class: C-1

Head Coach: Troy Schlueter (5th season) (24-15 record)

2019 record: 4-5

Returning Starters: 8 offense 9 defense

Overview:

The West Point-Beemer Football Team hopes their returning experience yields them a season like they had for two years prior to last year.

Back on both offense and defense for 5th year Head Coach Troy Schlueter include Edgar Rodriguez (5'10, 165 SR B/DB), Jesus Barragan (5'10, 165 SR QB/DB), Arturo Barrios (5'7, 150 SR B/LB), Alejandro Edeza (5'9, 170 SR B/LB), Keegan Doggett (6'3, 180 JR E/DB), Nolan James (6'1, 190 SR E/DL), and Zach Vander Griend (6'1, 185 SR OL/LB). Joe Rodriguez (5'8, 260 SR OL/DL) also returns on offense. Other returning defensive starters include Jesus Medina (6'3, 285 SR OL/DL), and Miguel Perez (6'6, 205 JR (E/DL).

Others likely to play include Riley Penrose (6'0, 170 JR QB/LB) and Cooper Colson (5'10, 200 JR OL/LB).

Coach Schlueter says Barragan is a do it all everything type of player. "Pretty electric with the ball in his hands, and a natural at running the option. Also a hard-nosed hitter in the secondary. Probably a bad idea to kick him the ball on special teams as well."

The Cadets figure to be solid and could potentially return to the playoffs this year.

Of course everything rides and depends on the coronavirus pandemic though.

Schlueter things were different at times this offseason. "Very different as we had no in person contact until June, but after June hit it was fairly normal with weights going well all summer."

I really think the Cadets have a chance to do well and be successful this year as long as the pandemic doesn't throw a fork into things.

Hopefully the players and coaches all stay safe and healthy and no one gets sick.

Season Outlook:

West Point-Beemer is in a District with Columbus Lakeview, Columbus Scotus, North Bend Central, and Schuyler this year.

The first three teams listed are very good, and will be a challenge to play for sure.

Schuyler drops down from Class B and is coached by former Husker Jason Ankrah so they won't be easy to beat either.

The non-district schedule features Arlington, Wayne, Battle Creek, O'Neill, and Pierce.

It's a tough schedule, but sets up nicely for West Point-Beemer to be successful, in my opinion.

Schlueter commented on the NSAA's Decision to move forward with Fall Sports. "We are very thankful to be able to play!"

I echo that as well as we are very fortunate and lucky to have an opportunity to have fall sports in the State of Nebraska.

After all, it had to be tough missing spring sports last year when this pandemic first started.

Schlueter says his team is ready to get back at it. "Kids are ready to be back at school, and back playing as well. I wouldn't say they're anxious, but I would say they're very eager to compete."

I look for the Cadets to be very hungry and motivated this year, and do everything they can to win while staying healthy and social distancing and all of that stuff.

Schlueter says the Cadets are veteran laden and well seasoned. "Returning multiple players with a lot of experience so we're looking to have an exciting year! Looks like we'll have depth on the DL, but looking to build OL depth going into the fall. Quarterback will be a three year starter so that always helps."

Hopefully West Point-Beemer is able to go through the entire season without anyone getting sick and hopefully everyone stays healthy (Fingers crossed).

The Cadets host Arlington in the season opener on August 28th.

2020 West Point-Beemer Cadets Football Schedule:

08/28/20 Arlington
09/04/20 Wayne
09/11/20 @ Battle Creek
09/18/20 @ ONeill
09/25/20 Columbus Scotus
10/02/20 @ Columbus Lakeview
10/09/20 @ Pierce

GACC looking to continue winning ways

Team: Guardian Angels Central Catholic

Mascot: Bluejays

Colors: Blue and White

Class: D-1

Head Coach: Dave Ridder (18th season)

2019 record: 4-5 (Lost to BDS in first round of playoffs)

Returning Starters: N/A

Overview:

The Guardian Angels Central Catholic Football Team looks to continue their winning ways this year as long as the coronavirus pandemic doesn't shut things down, but it doesn't figure to be easy given all who the Bluejays lost to graduation last year.

Key losses from last season include Noah Hass, Damon Crawford, Mitchell Peatrowsky, Casey Doernemann, Blake Pojar, and Aaron Disher.

Back for longtime and legendary Head Coach Dave Ridder include Cody Steffen, Cash Meier, Jaryn Smeal, Noah Kreikemeier, and Coy Kreikemeier.

It certainly sounds like the Bluejays will be skilled and talented in the backfield and perhaps at the skill positions on the outside as well, but the offensive and defensive lines could be a question mark.

GACC lost a lot of muscle and experience from last year that's not easy to replace.

Coach Ridder says the kids achieved a lot this offseason despite the challenging circumstances. "We had a good off season lifting and conditioning participation. The athletes really worked at it and quite frankly happy to be around each other for this summer."

It seems like something like this pandemic has a way of making everyone appreciate being around one another and just having the opportunity to do something.

Things we all used to take for granted won't be taken for granted from now on that's for sure.

So here's to hoping the pandemic doesn't affect, alter, or cancel the season and that everyone stays safe and healthy throughout the entire course of the season.

Season Outlook

GACC has a challenging schedule this year, a step up in competition they have been looking for if you may.

Non-District games against Wakefield, Nebraska City Lourdes, and Lutheran High Northeast figure to be daunting, and district games against the likes of Clarkson/Leigh, Howells-Dodge, Wisner-Pilger, and Stanton figure to be tough as well.

We will really find out and learn a lot about this Bluejay team this year.

Ridder weighs in on this whole situation. "We are taking it day to day and personally frustrated with some of the decisions made in regards to the virus. Politics and athletes (sports) should not be intertwined."

The only thing I will say is that I am very thankful and grateful that we are at least trying to play fall high school sports in the state of Nebraska. Other states and levels of football aren't as fortunate and lucky as we are.

Ridder adds his team is chomping at the bit to get back out there. "Our football players are very excited to play the great game of football."

A lot of people may think GACC is going to be down and struggle this year, and they could, but I could see the Bluejays being better than people expect or anticipate.

It wouldn't surprise me to see GACC surprise some people and turn a few heads.

I don't know if the Bluejays will be as dominant as they were before last year given the fact it doesn't appear they have as much talent this year as they did then, but I feel GACC still has a chance to be solid.

Of course as I mentioned though everything depends and rides on the pandemic.

Coronavirus is ultimately going to decide and dictate how this season goes.

Let's hope we get a full season in without and interruptions.

GACC opens up the season at Wakefield on August 27th in action that can be heard on 107.9 the Bull.

2020 Guardian Angels Central Catholic Bluejays Football Schedule:

Clarkson/Leigh looking for dynamic season

Team: Clarkson/Leigh

Mascot: Patriots

Colors: Red, Blue, Gray

Class: D-1

Head Coach: Jim Clarkson (21st season) (100-95 career record)

2019 record: 7-3 (lost to Falls City Sacred Heart in Second round of playoffs)

Returning Starters: 7 offense 7 defense

Overview:

The Clarkson/Leigh Patriots figure to be locked and loaded this season with the return of 7 starters on both sides of the ball, including Running Back Tommy McEvoy, who missed all of last season with a torn ACL.

Back on both sides of the ball for Head Coach Jim Clarkson are Lance Paprocki (5'8, 150 SR QB/DB), Eli Hays (5'6, 130 JR RB/DB), Carter Hanel (6'3, 205 JR TE/DE), Mitch Beeson (6'0, 200 JR OL/DE), Trevor Zulkoski (5'11, 185 SR TE/LB), and Cooper Vance (6'0, 245 JR OL/DL). Kyle Kasik (5'11, 170 SO RB/DB) also returns on the offensive side of the ball while Drew Beeson (5'8, 160 SO RB/LB) is the other returning defensive starter. Other returning starters/those likely to play include McEvoy (6'2, 195 SR RB/S), Austin Sayers (5'11, 250 SR OL/DL), Layne Krutz (5'11, 265 SR OL/DL), Kanyon Held (5'8, 175 JR TE/LB), Kyle Holmberg (5'10, 170 SO TE/LB), and Jackson Koehn (5'10, 180 SO OL/DL).

Coach Clarkson says McEvoy has had D-1 interest. "The Return of Tommy McEvoy. After suffering a Torn ACL in Late July and missing the 2019 season. Tommy will return to the field. During the season and into the winter months despite the injury Tommy has gained the interest of several College Programs including some Division 1 teams. Tommy has gone on several visits no offers yet as teams wait to see how he looks post injury. Tommy is also the son of our Assistant Coach and Offensive Coordinator Bob McEvoy."

Clarkson says he's like a caged animal ready to breakout. "Tommy coming of the ACL injury, is excited to play Football again. He is angry and pumped at the same time which could lead to an exciting year. I have tried to never over hype a player, and of course I am bias, but I firmly believe that Tommy is the best 8-man football player in the State. His instincts and closing speed on defense is amazing and his vision and toughness combined with his speed make him extremely dynamic. Can't wait to watch him play the game again."

McEvoy is a very talented back who could have a major breakout season and lead this team to greatness. Given what is all the line for him I wouldn't be shocked if he rushed for well over 1,000 yards again, maybe even 2,000.

Clarkson talks about Hays. "Eli came to us last year after moving in from DC West. He is a dynamic player he averaged 168 all purpose yards a game. He had 6 return TD's (4KOR, 2PR). Plus he was our best cover corner. Eli was named All-State in the LJS. Eli is very versatile with his running and catching abilities. He has a very bright future."

Hays helps out the team big time in my estimation.

Clarkson says Hanel is an up and coming player. "Carter is a really good young player. He is a very physical blocker, plays the game very hard, and has really good hands as a receiver. He will move from LB to DE on defense where I think he will excel even more. We really think Carter is a top level player."

Clarkson expects Paprocki to be a team leader. "Lance is a three year starter at QB. As our passing game continues to evolve Lance really became a force on the ground for us last season. We do expect Lance and the team make some big stides in the passing game as we have some good weapons to throw to. But his ability to run our option offense is second to none. Lance also is a very sure tackler on Defense and a leader with moxie."

Clarkson looks for Mitch Beeson to be the motivational leader. "Mitch lead our team in sacks (6) and TFL (10) . He plays with the best motor of any kid I have coached. His effort level is outstanding, and he is very physical. He is also the leader on our offensive line. he plays both Center and Guard."

I think Beeson is the type of player who can and will get everyone fired up before each game and be that emotional leader on and off the field.

Of course this all contingent upon the pandemic not shutting the season down.

Clarkson says the pandemic didn't alter or change the offseason a whole lot. "For us the Summer and preseason was surprisingly normal. Outside of some extra cleaning and a few extra precautions things felt and went Ok."

Hopefully we get to play a full season because Clarkson/Leigh is going to be amazing this year.

Season Outlook:

Clarkson/Leigh figures to have a breakout season.

Clarkson says the road isn't easy, but his team is ready. "We look to be a very competitive team this Fall. Our schedule is very tough as is our District so it will be a battle each week. We need to come together as a team and learn from last year, we have some good experience coming back but need to make sure we are solid on the line if we want to compete. If all the pieces fall together right we will be a tough out. We feel there is some excitement around the program, and the guys are fired up to play the game of football."

Clarkson/Leigh is in a District with Howells-Dodge, GACC, Wisner-Pilger, and Stanton, plus Madison.

The Jaguars, GACC, and Wisner-Pilger were all hit hard by graduation, but still figure to be tough and good.

Stanton comes down from C-2 so they figure to be tough as well.

Clarkson says his team is thrilled just to have the opportunity to play. "We are super jacked about how the NSAA is handling this very difficult situation. Very satisfied with the plan and how they have put the kids' interest first."

He adds there is a lot of buzz and excitement amongst everyone right now. "There has definitely been an extra pop in our step. We always have good summer attendance in the weight room, that being said this was the best summer we have ever had.  Practices have also been very sharp so far."

The stage is simply set for Clarkson/Leigh to go out there and do great things if the Pandemic doesn't shut things down.

Let's cross our fingers and hope that doesn't happen, and hope everyone stays healthy and safe, and no one gets sick.

The Bacon Bowl against Howells-Dodge on October 16th will be aired on 107.9 the Bull, and that game figures to be for all the marbles.

That should be a great one and if that game is played I can't wait for it and to see who wins it. I really think this could be Clarkson/Leigh's year.

The Patriots open up the season at home against Cross County on August 28th.
