West Point-Beemer hoping returning experience yields another big season

Team: West Point-Beemer

Mascot: Cadets

Colors: Red and White

Class: C-1

Head Coach: Troy Schlueter (5th season) (24-15 record)

2019 record: 4-5

Returning Starters: 8 offense 9 defense

Overview:

The West Point-Beemer Football Team hopes their returning experience yields them a season like they had for two years prior to last year.

Back on both offense and defense for 5th year Head Coach Troy Schlueter include Edgar Rodriguez (5'10, 165 SR B/DB), Jesus Barragan (5'10, 165 SR QB/DB), Arturo Barrios (5'7, 150 SR B/LB), Alejandro Edeza (5'9, 170 SR B/LB), Keegan Doggett (6'3, 180 JR E/DB), Nolan James (6'1, 190 SR E/DL), and Zach Vander Griend (6'1, 185 SR OL/LB). Joe Rodriguez (5'8, 260 SR OL/DL) also returns on offense. Other returning defensive starters include Jesus Medina (6'3, 285 SR OL/DL), and Miguel Perez (6'6, 205 JR (E/DL).

Others likely to play include Riley Penrose (6'0, 170 JR QB/LB) and Cooper Colson (5'10, 200 JR OL/LB).

Coach Schlueter says Barragan is a do it all everything type of player. "Pretty electric with the ball in his hands, and a natural at running the option. Also a hard-nosed hitter in the secondary. Probably a bad idea to kick him the ball on special teams as well."

The Cadets figure to be solid and could potentially return to the playoffs this year.

Of course everything rides and depends on the coronavirus pandemic though.

Schlueter things were different at times this offseason. "Very different as we had no in person contact until June, but after June hit it was fairly normal with weights going well all summer."

I really think the Cadets have a chance to do well and be successful this year as long as the pandemic doesn't throw a fork into things.

Hopefully the players and coaches all stay safe and healthy and no one gets sick.

Season Outlook:

West Point-Beemer is in a District with Columbus Lakeview, Columbus Scotus, North Bend Central, and Schuyler this year.

The first three teams listed are very good, and will be a challenge to play for sure.

Schuyler drops down from Class B and is coached by former Husker Jason Ankrah so they won't be easy to beat either.

The non-district schedule features Arlington, Wayne, Battle Creek, O'Neill, and Pierce.

It's a tough schedule, but sets up nicely for West Point-Beemer to be successful, in my opinion.

Schlueter commented on the NSAA's Decision to move forward with Fall Sports. "We are very thankful to be able to play!"

I echo that as well as we are very fortunate and lucky to have an opportunity to have fall sports in the State of Nebraska.

After all, it had to be tough missing spring sports last year when this pandemic first started.

Schlueter says his team is ready to get back at it. "Kids are ready to be back at school, and back playing as well. I wouldn't say they're anxious, but I would say they're very eager to compete."

I look for the Cadets to be very hungry and motivated this year, and do everything they can to win while staying healthy and social distancing and all of that stuff.

Schlueter says the Cadets are veteran laden and well seasoned. "Returning multiple players with a lot of experience so we're looking to have an exciting year! Looks like we'll have depth on the DL, but looking to build OL depth going into the fall. Quarterback will be a three year starter so that always helps."

Hopefully West Point-Beemer is able to go through the entire season without anyone getting sick and hopefully everyone stays healthy (Fingers crossed).

The Cadets host Arlington in the season opener on August 28th.
