Team: Scribner-Snyder
Mascot: Trojans
Colors: Red and White
Class: D-2
Head Coach: Anthony Ruzicka (6th season) (18-24 career record)
2015 record: 3-5
Returning Starters: 2 offense 3 defense
Overview:
Like last year, the Scribner-Snyder Trojans don't return a lot of starters, but will look to remain competitive after winning a few games a season ago.
Scribner-Snyder returns two starters on offense in Alex Nuno (RB 5’9” 165 12th) and Riley Meyer (OL 5’11” 265 12th).
The Trojans bring back three starters on defense in Meyer, Brandon Noel (LB 5’9”, 175, 12th), and
Harrison Riggle (DL, 6’5”, 300, 11th).
Head Coach Anthony Ruzicka says his team has some holes to fill on both sides of the ball. "Offensively, we lost our starting QB, RB, 2 starters in the OL and 2 Starting TEs. Defensively we lost 2 DL, 2 LBs, and 1 DB. We have to replace a lot of positions, so that is always big."
Quarterback is one position of importance for Scribner-Snyder as the Trojans graduated dual threat QB Michael Broussard. Ruzicka likes this year's projected starter. "Sophomore Jayden Smeal will take over at QB and has the potential to have a big year. He is young and small but he is football savvy and has the knack for making plays."
From the sounds of it, Smeal has the ability to take over a game and make players around him better.
His ability to make plays and lead this team will be critical to their success, in my opinion.
Ruzicka says it's going to take a total team effort for this team to be successful. "We will need to come together as a team and play as one unit. Everyone needs to buy into the system and follow the game plan set. We will have to limit penalties and stay ahead of the sticks, and our offense should be very solid. Defensively, we will need to play sound fundamental football and improve our tackling. We have really focused on proper tackling this fall and we are going to need that technique to transfer over. We have to keep our heads up, play with great attitude and intensity and maximum effort."
Playing team ball will be important, especially given the tough district Scribner-Snyder is in.
Dropping down to D-2 should help the Trojans a little bit although at least a few of Scribner-Snyder's opponents this year were in D-1 the last two years.
Season Outlook:
Like I mentioned above, Scribner-Snyder is in a very tough district, and their schedule as a whole is pretty difficult.
The Trojans open up with Mead, Scribner-Snyder then has another difficult home game with Bloomfield.
Scribner-Snyder then hits the road for back-to-back games with Emerson-Hubbard and Winside.
The Trojans then begin district play with home games against Fullerton and Humphrey St. Francis.
Scribner-Snyder concludes the regular season with road games at Osceola and Cedar Bluffs.
Ruzicka says his squad has to worry about themselves and not get caught up in what is being said about them given their schedule. "On paper, we play a pretty tough schedule. Our district is very talented overall. We have to just go out and play football and not worry about which newspaper says who the better team is. We have to believe in ourselves, trust our stuff, and go out and play."
I think the Trojans could be either 4-0 or 1-3 after their first four weeks of games. The first three could go either way, in my opinion.
I look for Scribner-Snyder to win at least one district game, making them either 5-3 or perhaps 6-2.
The Trojans could also find themselves going 3-5 or 2-6 if they don't catch breaks.
Ruzicka says the season outlook is one of optimism and uncertainty. "This is tough. If we come together as a team and play as one unit I really feel that we have the talent to be 5-3. If we don’t play for the guy next to us, and have poor attitudes and poor outlooks, then it is going to be a long season where we may not win a game."
Challenges lie ahead for Scribner-Snyder, but having the first two games of the season at home should help them get off on the right foot.
We will see how quickly the Trojans can develop. If Scribner-Snyder can get one of the first two games at home, and be at worst 2-2 heading into the Fullerton game, that should give them a chance to win a district game or two and get into the playoffs.
