Stanton wins big at Elmwood-Murdock
The Stanton Mustangs opened up their season Friday night with a 41-7 win at Elmwood-Murdock.
Stanton scored 21 second quarter points to lead 21-0 at halftime after neither team scored in the first quarter.
The Mustangs won the third quarter 14-0 to go up 35-0 at the end of three. The Knights put up 7 fourth quarter points compared to 6 for Stanton.
Trey Erbst carried the ball 4 times for 131 yards and a touchdown. Kadyn Fernau added 104 yards on 7 carries, including a score.
Hunter Stallbaum was 4-5 passing with 102 yards and a touchdown.
Myles Nickolite made 3 receptions for 75 yards, and scored once.
Stanton had 389 yards of total offense, including 287 on the ground. The defense surrendered 254 yards of offense, 160 coming on the ground.
This was a dominant win for the Mustangs. It was exactly the type of win Stanton needed to start the season.
The Mustangs (1-0) are at Wisner-Pilger (0-1) Friday night.
The Gators lost 28-6 at Crofton in their season opener.
Stanton should win, but this is a rivalry game and anything can happen.
The Mustangs can't take Wisner-Pilger lightly, and must be ready to have a performance similar to the Elmwood-Murdock game.
It's important for Stanton to get this game with Cross County and Logan View coming to town in the coming weeks.
You always want to beat the Gators if you are the Mustangs, and this game is as important as any for Stanton.
You can bet both teams will be jacked up for this game, and will look to get after one another.
This is a rivalry game, and nothing would surprise me in this one. I'm not suggesting chippy or dirty play as I hope this is a clean game, but I could see this game being closer than if it wasn't a rivalry game.
The Mustangs have to be excited to go into Wisner with the chance of knocking off the Gators on their home field.
This should be an electric atmosphere with both teams' fans cheering loud and hard for their respective team.
You can bet emotions will be running high all the way around, which should make for a high energy game.
