Wisner-Pilger looks for breakout season

Team: Wisner-Pilger

Mascot: Gators

Colors: Green and White

Class: C-2

Head Coach:  Brent Bauer (9th season) (23-45 record)

2015 record: 3-6

Returning Starters: 7 offense 7 defense

Overview:

A veteran laden Wisner-Pilger squad looks to lead the Gators to big things this season. Wisner-Pilger returns 8 starters on both sides of the ball from last year's 3-6 squad.

On offense, Cooper Von Seggern (6'2, 200 SR) returns at QB. He threw for 832 yards and 11 touchdowns last season, and ran for another 557 yards and 10 TD's. He will have a couple of returning targets to throw to in Korrell Koehlmoos (6'1, 155 JR WR) and Hunter Waterman (6'1, 155 JR WR).

Koehlmoos caught 19 balls for 350 yards last year while Waterman hauled in 15 passes for 237 yards.

Up front, the Gators figure to be led by Travis Keyes (6'0, 285 SR C), Cobe Porter (6'0, 200 SR), Gage Riecken (5'9, 170 SR), Nathan Hatterman (6'3, 225 SR OL), and Jayden Raabe (6'3, 205 SO OL).

On defense, Wisner-Pilger will have Keyes, Hatterman, and Raabe at DT , DL, and DL, respectively,

Porter and Riecken will help patrol things at linebacker while Koehlmoos and Waterman will try and slow down other teams' passing attacks at defensive back. Porter racked up 91 tackles a season ago.

Von Seggern will help out from his free safety spot.

Other returning letterwinners include seniors Brody Mattson and Jacob Denton, and sophomores Dylan Uhing and Jacob Borgelt.

Head Coach Brent Bauer says this team is very talented and experienced. "We have a large senior class with some athletic juniors.  Leadership has been good and the work ethic is good.  Some very talented sophomores and large freshman class hope to add some depth that we haven’t had in many years.  If we stay healthy we expect to be competitive. "

This is definitely the Gators' year to do something. Wisner-Pilger is due to have a good season, and this year is as good as any to breakout.

The schedule does the Gators no favors, but in order to be the best, you have to beat the best, and that is exactly what Wisner-Pilger will try and accomplish this season.

The Gators definitely have the talent and numbers to do some special things this year, it's simply a matter of everything coming together at the right time for Wisner-Pilger.

Season Outlook:

As I mentioned above, Wisner-Pilger's schedule is tough.

The Gators open the season at Crofton next Friday, and return home for a tough game with Stanton the following week.

Wisner-Pilger has a very winnable game at home against West Point-Beemer the following week before back-to-back tough road games at Hartington Cedar Catholic and Fremont Bergan. The Gators then return home for a difficult home game against Oakland-Craig.

The final three games of the regular season could very well make or break Wisner-Pilger.

The Gators have back-to-back road games at BRLD and Logan View towards the end of the regular season before capping off the regular season at home against Tekamah-Herman.

With all of that said, I think Wisner-Pilger is capable of going 6-3 and making the playoffs. That could be best case scenario for the Gators.

Worst case I see Wisner-Pilger going 2-7 or 1-8.

I think the Gators will be better than 2-7 or 1-8, but the schedule is a gauntlet for Wisner-Pilger, and if injuries pile up and take their toll on the Gators then it could be a challenging season.

I really do think the pieces are in place for Wisner-Pilger to have a solid season if everyone stays healthy though.

The Gators just have to maximize their potential, be diverse on offense, take care of the ball, and limit turnovers.

Brent Bauer's District Rankings:
