North Bend Central looking to make strides in C-2

Team: North Bend Central

Mascot: Tigers

Colors: Orange and Black

Class: C-2

Head Coach: Ryan Stieren (3rd season) (6-10 record)

2017 record: 2-6

Returning Starters: 8

Overview:

The North Bend Central Football Team looks to make headway in Class C-2, dropping from the ranks of C-1.

The Tigers return 8 total starters, including John Emanuel (6'2, 185 SR WR/DB), Jacob Ray (5'10, 180 SR RB/FS), Trevor Nelson (5'10, 225 SR OL/DL), Jeremy Doernemann (5'9, 215 SR OL/DL),  Sam Buckingham (5'9, 170 SR WR/DB), Ben Rolenc (6'5, 215 SR OL/DL) Austin Endorf  (6'2, 165 JR QB), and Gavin Peterson (5'10, 210 JR OL/LB).

Newcomers who could make an impact include Cody Pospisil (WR/LB), Breckin Peters (WR/LB),
Joe Howser (WR/DB), Ethan Mullally (5'9, 170 SO RB/DB), Cole Johnson (OL/DL), Zach Ortmeier ( 5'10, 160 SR WR/DB), Cole Kluthe (TE/LB),  and Cody Prohaska (WR/DB).

Other linemen who could contribute include Cole Johnson (5' 10, 200 JR), and Hunter Johnston (5'9, 180).

Head Coach Ryan Stieren says the Tigers should be solid at the skill positions. "Very experienced with both our offensive/defensive schemes. Skill positions will have a lot of depth. Offensively, we should be explosive with a very good QB returning and skill players that have good speed and size. Defensively, our D-Line and Secondary will be physical and tough to handle."

All-District Linebacker Brock Ray is a big loss from last season. Stieren says the team needs to improve at his position and up front. "Defensively, we need to fill in some holes at the linebacker position and build depth across the board. Offensively, we need to have a couple of our young offensive linemen to step up and play well for us and we must establish a more consistent run game."

Stieren adds the team had a good offseason. "We had almost all of our guys get to the mark that we wanted to hit for the offseason, so that's a tribute to them."

Stieren says the Tigers went to the Logan View 7 on 7 camp as well as the Midland Jamboree, hosted by Columbus High School.

Stieren adds Endorf has put in a lot of work individually. "Austin's a kid who's put in a lot of work when nobody's watching. And he went to a lot of camps this summer. He went to Midland, Northern Iowa, South Dakota State."

I look for Endorf to have another outstanding campaign for the Tigers. He is as good as advertised in my mind, having passed for over 1500 yards and 15 touchdowns a season ago.

I look for the connection between him and Emanuel and Buckingham and others to be a strong one.

I think North Bend Central's aerial attack will be on full display once again this season, allowing the Tigers to have success.

Season Outlook:

The North Bend Central Tigers look to be improved from a year ago when they went 2-6.

A lot was expected of North Bend Central last year, but weather shortened a couple of games.

You can bet the Tigers will be out to change their fortunes and luck this year though.

Stieren feels his team won't get so worn down against C-2 competition as opposed to when they were in C-1. "It gives us some sort of an advantage, I think so. I think we might be a little bit deeper than the teams we play. And I think depth in football is very important, and in the past I thought we played pretty well with teams, but our depth was a big issue. And now I think that our depth is going to allow us to hang closer in some bigger ball games."

North Bend Central starts off the year at home next Friday against Johnson County Central.

The Tigers' District (C2-4) includes David City Aquinas, Centennial, Shelby-Rising City, Twin River, and David City.

Fairly difficult in my mind minus having to play the Wahoo Schools in Class C-1.

Stieren says Aquinas and Centennial figure to be juggernauts. "Year in and year out Aquinas has a lot of tradition, and Centennial's really come on lately here. They played for the state title last year. And they have a very good senior class so those two teams are projected to be in the top of C-2, 2 of the top 3."

Stieren says the middle group of teams include Shelby-Rising City, David City, and Twin River.

I think the Tigers have a chance to go 5-4, maybe 6-3, and contend for the playoffs.

Aquinas, Centennial, Logan View/Scribner-Snyder, and Stanton all figure to be very tough matchups.

I feel every other game has a good chance to be a win for North Bend Central.

The Tigers lost a couple close games last year and were very up and down the entire season.

Perhaps North Bend Central can turn the tide this year and become more consistent and win more ball games.

I think the schedule certainly sets up well for the Tigers to be successful so we'll see what they can do this year.

A win next Friday against the Thunderbirds would be an excellent start.

I feel starting the season strong is important for North Bend Central and their success this season.
