Clarkson/Leigh loses big to GACC

Beemer-The Clarkson/Leigh Football team lost 62-18 at GACC last Friday night.

The Bluejays' Derek Petz got the scoring started, running in a TD from 14 yards out to put GACC ahead 8-0 at the 4:40 mark of the 1st quarter.

Petz then hit Scribner-Snyder transfer Jadyn Smeal with a 27-yard TD pass, and the Bluejays went up 14-0 with 2:27 remaining in the opening period.

Ross Klitz added a touchdown of his own to give GACC a 20-0 lead with 1:41 left in the 1st quarter.

The Patriots got on the board in the 2nd quarter as Anthony Bruhn rumbled 45 yards to the end zone to cut the deficit to 20-6 with 11:34 left to go until halftime.

The Bluejays' Jared Minnick returned the ensuing kickoff 65 yards for a score that put GACC up 26-6.

Clarkson/Leigh's Tommy McEvoy (Mack-uh-voy) responded with a 49-yard TD run, and the Patriots trailed 26-12 with just over 11 minutes left to go until halftime.

Minnick then returned another kick for a touchdown, and GACC extended their lead to 34-12.

Minnick scored again 2 1/2 minutes later, this time on a 49-yard run that gave the Bluejays a 42-12 cushion.

Bruhn then hooked up with McEvoy on a 27-yard TD pass with 4:14 left to go until halftime that made it a 42-18 game in favor of GACC.

Petz hit Smeal with a 51-yard TD pass to extend the Bluejay lead to 48-18 with 3:38 left to go until halftime.

The final touchdown of the half was scored by Jayden Rahn, who hauled in a 31-yard pass from Petz to put GACC up 54-18 at the break.

Petz ran one in from 14 yards with just under 4 minutes remaining in the 3rd quarter to make up the final score.

McEvoy led the Patriots (0-2) on the ground with 73 yards on 11 carries. Bruhn ran the ball 19 times for 70 yards, scoring a TD.

GACC had 295 yards of total offense, including 163 rushing while Clarkson/Leigh amassed 220 yards of offense, 195 coming on the ground.

Tough game for the Patriots. Clarkson/Leigh simply could not hang with the Bluejays.

Clarkson/Leigh's next game is at Omaha Nation (1-2) this Friday.

The Chiefs lost 66-8 at home to Howells-Dodge this past Friday night.

This should be the Patriots' first win of the season.

Omaha Nation's lone win is by forfeit, and quite honestly I don't see the Chiefs hanging with Clarkson/Leigh.

I look for the Patriots to win by over 30, and perhaps have a running clock at some point in the game.

Clarkson/Leigh desperately needs to put a good game together though. The first two games of the season were very difficult for the Patriots I would think, although the losses are to two quality teams.

This is a must win for Clarkson/Leigh. There's no other way to put it.

The Patriots have to come out and play with a sense of urgency and pride Friday night.

Clarkson/Leigh has to come out ready to play smashmouth football and hit people.

The Patriots can't show any mercy to Omaha Nation.

I think the bye week came at a good time for Clarkson/Leigh.

I'm thinking it allowed the Patriots to regroup and forget about what happened the first two weeks of the season.

I'm also thinking the extra practice time most likely allowed Clarkson/Leigh to fine tune and work on some things and areas they struggled with and in.

I look for the Patriots to be ready and raring to go Friday night. I think you will see this Clarkson/Leigh team come out and put things all together.

All in all, I expect it to be a great night of football for the Patriots.

I think Clarkson/Leigh has a shot to win 3 out of their next 4 games so perhaps the Patriots can be 3-3 with two games left to go in the season.

I think that would be pretty respectable given how the season started.

As far as I'm concerned the season starts over Friday night. Clarkson/Leigh just has to keep moving on and pressing forward until the job gets done.
