Stanton downs Wisner-Pilger

The Stanton Football team won 28-6 at home over Wisner-Pilger Friday night.

The Mustangs scored just 6 points in the first quarter, and led 6-0 at halftime, but scored 8 points in the third quarter to go up 14-0 after three, and won the fourth quarter 14-6 to win going away.

Marcus Spotanski was 3-6 passing for 93 yards. Sutton Pohlman hauled in 2 passes for 85 yards.

Cade Goger had 14 rushing attempts for 74 yards and a touchdown while Gauge Erickson ran the ball 11 times for 72 yards. Beau Wilke ran the ball 5 times for 65 yards while Kadyn Fernau rushed the rock 10 times for 50 yards.

Ashton Flood made a team-high 12 tackles while Erickson and Tayton Lierman made 9 and 7, respectively.

Stanton had 387 yards of total offense, including 294 on the ground.

I thought the Mustangs answered the bell and played better than they did last week, especially in the 4th quarter. I feel Stanton improved from the first week to the second week, and got their run game on track.

The Mustangs (1-1) take on Cross County (0-2) on the road Friday night.

The Cougars lost 61-6 at St. Paul last time out.

This was a tough game for Stanton last year, but I don't see that being the case this time.

Cross County has given up 126 points in their first two games, and I look for the Mustangs to have their way with the Cougars this year.

I think Stanton's run game will be even better Friday night than it was last week, and I look for the Mustangs to win big and going away.

I think this will be a good game to see how Stanton measures up with teams like Lutheran High Northeast.

The Eagles downed Cross County 65-20 on the road in the first game of the season so this game should give us an idea of how the Mustangs compare to other teams in the district.

Stanton finished strong in the fourth quarter last week, something they didn't do in the Elmwood-Murdock loss.

Now it's a matter of playing a complete game, and dominating in all facets of the game for four quarters.

The Mustangs have yet to put together a true complete game this year, but I look for that to change Friday night.

Stanton was very balanced in the run game and got a lot of kids touches against the Gators, and I think that's something Stanton will probably try and do again Friday night.

This is one of those games where the Mustangs need to get out to a big lead and have a running clock to rest starters and get underclassmen valuable varsity game experience on the field.

Stanton has this game and a challenging contest at Logan View next week so these next two games are must wins for the Mustangs in terms of preparing for a gauntlet of a district.

None of these first four games hail in comparison to what Stanton is going to see in its final five games of the season so the Mustangs need to use these final two non-district game to work out any kinks in the armor so they can be ready to make a run at the playoffs and a district title.

This team got stronger from Week one to Week two so there's no reason to think Stanton won't get even better this week and every week for the rest of the season for that matter.
