Oakland-Craig rebounds with win at Crofton
The Oakland-Craig Knights rebounded from last Friday night's loss to Battle Creek by winning a top five matchup at Crofton Friday night, 38-22.
Oakland-Craig led 8-0 at the end of one before winning the second quarter 15-14 to lead 23-14 at halftime.
Both teams scored 8 third quarter points, and the score after three was 31-22 in favor of the Knights.
Oakland-Craig outscored the Warriors 7-0 in the fourth quarter.
Head Coach Joe Anderson says his team responded well following the loss to the Braves. "It was a great road win for our team. After coming off a very physical game against Battle Creek, our kids really competed hard and played well. This game showed that we are capable of beating some of the top teams in C-2, as I feel Crofton is a very good football team."
Evan Reinert was 12-17 passing for 208 yards and three touchdowns. Garrett Seagren brought in 5 passes for 101 yards, and two scores. Kobe Benne caught 6 balls for 88 yards, and scored once.
Hoss Smith ran for 107 yards on 21 carries, and scored once.
Josh Dixon made 12 tackles while Ben Ward and Smith notched 9 and 8, respectively.
The Knights had 385 yards of total offense, 228 coming through the air.
Anderson says his team's athleticism led to them being balanced on offense. "It was very important for us to be balanced. Crofton was very big and physical inside and the inside running game was very limited. We did a great job of blocking on the perimeter, and we were able to get some of our athletes in space and they made some big plays for us. Evan Reinert also did a great job of making his reads and delivering the ball where it need to go."
Oakland-Craig (2-1) hosts Ponca (3-0) Friday night.
The Indians are one of the surprise teams in C-2 as they've picked up wins over Fremont Bergan, Tekamah-Herman, and BRLD.
Anderson says his squad will have to put together a good game to win. "For the 3rd week in a row, we will get a undefeated top 10 team. Ponca has a lot of great athletes and experience on the field. They can do a lot of different things on offense, so our defense will really have to play assignment sound football. We will have to be at the top of our game again this week if we want to come out on top."
Ponca downed the Wolverines 43-36 at home last week. Anderson says playing the Indians gives his team a chance to get better. "The win over Crofton was good to get back on the winning track. I feel it is important for us continue to improve each game so we are playing our best football, come October. So this game gives us another chance to go back out there and improve upon the mistakes that we made last week. We are doing some very good things, but we have to do them more consistently if we want to win a district title."
This is Oakland-Craig's last non district game. It's the Knights' last chance to shine before district play begins.
Ponca is good, but I don't know if they've faced a team quite as talented as Oakland-Craig.
I look for the Indians to challenge and give the Knights a good game, but I think Oakland-Craig will be too much for Ponca in the end.
The Indians' offense has been really good thus far, but I feel like the Knights will do enough on offense and defense to put up more points on the board than Ponca.
Oakland-Craig is an elite team, and as good as the Indians are, I feel the Knights are better.
We will find out Friday night, but I like Oakland-Craig's chances of picking up the win.
