West Point-Beemer picks up first win of season over North Bend Central
The West Point-Beemer Cadets knocked off North Bend Central 19-13 on the road Friday night.
Neither team scored in the first quarter. The Cadets struck in the second quarter to lead 6-0 at halftime.
Both teams scored 6 points in the third quarter, and the score after three was 12-6 in favor of West Point-Beemer.
Both teams scored 7 fourth quarter points to make up the final score.
Riley Berg had 143 yards rushing on 24 carries, including two touchdowns. Kole Hughes added 60 yards rushing on 14 carries, scoring once. Hughes also threw for 78 yards on 8-12 passing.
Berg racked up 7 tackles for the Cadets.
West Point-Beemer had 363 yards of total offense, 275 coming on the ground while giving up 137 yards, including 70 passing.
Head Coach Troy Schlueter says it was nice to pick up that first win. "Oh yeah absolutely. We were just really wanting to improve on every aspect of our game going into it. We got thumped pretty good by Arlington the week before. So anytime you're a competitor, and you have a bad taste in your mouth, you're kind of itching to get back on the field."
The Cadets (1-1) travel to Wisner Friday night to take on Wisner-Pilger (0-2).
Wisner-Pilger lost 48-13 at home to Stanton last week and 28-6 at Crofton the week before.
Schlueter is new to the rivalry. "I'm actually just kind of learning about the rivalry cause this is my second year here. And I did not know that it was as intense as it is with some people. So I'm kind of excited about that, I love rivalry games, and looking forward to matching up with a good team this week."
As big as last week's win was, a win this week over the Gators would be absolutely huge for this team.
A win would get West Point-Beemer's season headed in the right direction if it isn't headed there already.
This is an excellent opportunity for the Cadets to get to 2-1 on the season.
Wisner-Pilger is sort of banged up right now as a lot of their players are injured so West Point-Beemer needs to take advantage of that.
I think the Cadets have a fairly good shot to win Friday night, but it's a rivalry game so don't count out the Gators.
This game is for Cuming County bragging rights when it comes to 11 man football.
This game is a big deal for both schools and all four towns, and I expect there to be a pretty big crowd Friday night.
These types of games are why you play the game, and I look for West Point-Beemer to play well.
The Cadets have to continue to be physical at the line of scrimmage and get their run game going with Berg.
Kickoff between the Gators and Cadets is slated for 7:00 p.m. with pregame at 6:40 on 107.9 the Bull.
