Wisner-Pilger drops home game to Stanton
The Wisner-Pilger Gators lost 48-13 at home to Stanton Friday night.
Stanton led 12-7 at the end of the first quarter. The Mustangs shutout the Gators 22-0 in the second quarter to go up 34-7 at halftime.
Stanton won the third quarter 14-6 to make it a 48-7 game at the end of three.
Neither team scored in the fourth quarter.
Wisner-Pilger gave up 347 yards of offense, including 291 on the ground.
Head Coach Brent Bauer says injuries have taken their toll on his team. "Oh one thing we've learned is at our level, of Class C-2 football, injuries can really mount up on you. And that's been something that's been kind of a negative habit I guess for our current team is we're really been bit by the injury bug. We had some kids get hurt towards the end of baseball season there, and those injuries have kind of lingered onto football season. We've had a couple kids get injured since we've started practice as well."
A couple of longtime rivals meet in Wisner Friday night as Wisner-Pilger (0-2) hosts West Point-Beemer (1-1).
Bauer says this game is a big deal. "This is the biggest 11 man game in Cuming County with Wisner-Pilger and West Point-Beemer. It's been a rivalry I think since the beginning of time. It means a lot to both towns to win this game, and these are kind of fun games to be a part of."
The two teams last met in 2013 with the Cadets winning 34-14.
Anything can happen in this game, especially when Cooper Von Seggern and Korrell Koehlmoos are on the same team.
Those two have to get things going for the Gators. Wisner-Pilger also has to be physical at the line of scrimmage to try and slow down West Point-Beemer's Riley Berg.
He had 143 yards rushing against North Bend Central, and I think the run game and physicality at the line of scrimmage will decide who wins this game.
The Gators have to limit turnovers and get their offense going.
Converting on third down and coming up with timely defensive stops will be important for Wisner-Pilger as well.
This is a huge game and the stakes couldn't be any higher for the Gators.
Wisner-Pilger must step up and perform well.
Kickoff between the Gators and Cadets is slated for 7:00 p.m. with pregame at 6:40 on 107.9 the Bull.
