Clarkson/Leigh downs Elgin Public/Pope John
The Clarkson/Leigh Patriots got back on track with a 51-28 road win over Elgin Public/Pope John Friday night.
The Patriots led 13-8 at the end of one before winning the second quarter 14-12 to take a 27-20 halftime lead.
Clarkson/Leigh outscored the Wolfpack 12-8 in the third quarter to go up 39-28 at the end of three.
The Patriots won the fourth quarter 12-0 to make up the final score.
Jacob Gall rushed for 124 yards on 10 carries, and scored twice. Hector Mendoza added 71 yards rushing on 10 attempts, and scored two times. Anthony Bruhn carried the ball 14 times for 68 yards, punching the ball in the end zone three times.
Bruhn was 4-7 passing for 79 yards with a touchdown.
Tim Zimmerman made 11 tackles while Derek Gurnsey notched 9. Bruhn and Paxten Indra registered 8 each.
Clarkson/Leigh amassed 344 yards of total offense, including 265 rushing.
The defense gave up 341 yards of total offense, 242 coming on the ground.
Things were pretty much dead even from a yardage standpoint, but the Patriots won in the area that matters most, and that's the scoreboard.
Clarkson/Leigh (3-3) hosts Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family (3-3) Friday night.
The Bulldogs lost 30-18 at Howells-Dodge this past Friday night.
Hopefully Bradley Bunner is back for the Patriots because Clarkson/Leigh really needs him.
Other players stepped up and led this team Friday night, but the Patriots are going to need Bunner to beat Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family, in my opinion.
The Bulldogs downed the Wolfpack 46-8 so I think Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family is a little ahead of Clarkson/Leigh if the Patriots don't have Bunner.
If Bunner is back, I think Clarkson/Leigh stands a good chance to win. I don't know about their chances without him though.
These last two games are very important for the Patriots' playoff hopes. I think Clarkson/Leigh has to win at least one of their remaining two games to get in.
I think the Patriots are very capable of winning one of their next two games, if not both of them.
Clarkson/Leigh has to continue to score a lot on offense, and play improved defense.
I think the Bulldogs may be the better team defensively, but I feel the Patriots are the stronger team offensively.
One way or another it should be a good battle Friday night.
I would call this a must win with a tough game looming against Howells-Dodge next week.
Clarkson/Leigh doesn't want to have to rely on a win over the Jaguars to get into the playoffs. The Patriots would just assume take care of business Friday night and guarantee themselves a .500 record.
It could pretty much be do or die for Clarkson/Leigh Friday night.
