Winnebago falls at home to GACC
The Winnebago Indians fell 67-34 at home to Guardian Angels Central Catholic Friday night.
The Bluejays led 13-8 after one and outscored the Indians 32-6 in the second quarter to take a 45-14 lead into the locker room.
GACC shutout Winnebago 6-0 in the third quarter to lead 51-14 after three.
The Indians won the fourth quarter 20-16.
Cedrick Blackdeer was 13-26 passing for 353 yards with three touchdowns and four interceptions.
Drake Gorrin hauled in 7 passes for 216 yards, and scored once. Angelo Suarez made 4 catches for 79 yards, including a score. And Miguel Baker brought in 2 passes for 59 yards, and scored once.
Gorrin racked up 14 tackles to lead all players.
Winnebago amassed 424 yards of total offense, including 353 through the air.
The defense gave up 416 yards of total offense, including 353 rushing.
I thought the Indians competed well and held their own with the exception of the second quarter. Take away that quarter and Winnebago is right in it.
The Indians (2-5) round out the season at Homer (0-7) Friday night.
The Knights lost 38-8 at home to Howells-Dodge last time out.
This is the season for Winnebago. There is no postseason for the Indians.
This is Winnebago's playoff game. The final game these seniors will ever play in their high school careers.
The Indians should be able to make the quick trip up Highway 75 and come away with the win.
The Knights have had a tough season, and Winnebago has only gotten better as the year has gone along, in my opinion.
Homer did have 174 yards rushing against the Jaguars though so the Indians have to be wary of the Knights' run game.
Gorrin has to have the same big game receiving he had against GACC, and Blackdeer needs to be on his game again as well.
Blackdeer's completion percentage and taking care of the football can be better, and will be against Homer I think.
Winnebago certainly hasn't had an easy time stopping people this season, but the Indians should be able to outscore the Knights.
I look for Winnebago to play four quarters of football like they did against Omaha Nation, and put it all together one final time.
This game is important for the future of this program.
This program has gotten better over the last couple of seasons, and it would be a big deal for the Indians to get to three wins.
I really think Winnebago football is on the rise, and believe the players will prove it Friday night.
