Howells-Dodge beats Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family

The Howells-Dodge Jaguars defeated Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family 30-18 in High School Football action Friday night on 107.9 the Bull.

Dylan Horejsi had 231 yards rushing on 29 carries for Howells-Dodge (4-2) while Jordan Brichacek rushed for 102 yards on 16 carries.

Dax VanLengen was 5-9 passing for 83 yards with a touchdown and an interception while Zach Bayer caught 4 passes for 76 yards and a touchdown for Howells-Dodge.

Bayer made 8 tackles while Connor Blum and Brichacek made 7 apiece.

The Jaguars racked up 448 yards of total offense, including 355 on the ground. The defense gave up 214 yards of offense, including 114 through the air.

Head Coach Mike Speirs says his team had too many penalties.

"We sure did get them at unfortunate times. We had that one drive where I think we got the same first down four times, and in the end we still didn't get it, we had to punt it. Luckily we were able to overcome a lot of those. That score right before halftime, in our two losses we've given up a score right before halftime like that. That's the third time this year we've done that. This one was unfortunate. Our safety slipped on the route and the kid was able to get deep on us and give them a chance to score. But I thought our kids did a great job in the second half of really battling."

Speirs says his team will have two more tough matches against Homer and Clarkson/Leigh.

"We got to finish strong and try to position ourselves to get into the playoffs."

Howells-Dodge takes on the winless Knights on the road Friday.

Homer lost 63-14 at Guardian Angels Central Catholic this past Friday night.

The Knights have had a tough season for the most part although a couple of their games have been close.

The Jaguars should be able to win pretty easily though I would think.

The one thing Howells-Dodge can't get caught doing though is looking ahead to Clarkson/Leigh next week.

Right now the Jaguars are on the outside looking in in terms of hosting a first round playoff game, but I think two wins should give Howells-Dodge a first round playoff game at home.

The Jaguars have to keep the train rolling and the mojo rolling, and continue to perform at a high level.

It has been a good bounce back season for Howells-Dodge so far, and this team is still young. It's now simply a matter of finishing if you are the Jaguars.

Howells-Dodge has to finish what they started at the beginning of this season.

I think the Jaguars are in a good position to finish the year 6-2, but Howells-Dodge has to keep playing well.

The Jaguars have to continue to take things one week, one game at a time. Homer should be Howells-Dodge's only focus right now.

The Jaguars have to do what they did against Elgin Public/Pope John, and that's put the game away early.

Howells-Dodge doesn't want to let the Knights hang around and believe they have a shot to win.

The Jaguars have to come out and take care of business from the start. Build a big, insurmountable lead and have a running clock in the second half. That has to be the idea and goal for Howells-Dodge.

If the Jaguars run the ball the way they did against Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family, they shouldn't have any trouble with Homer.

The Knights gave up 386 yards rushing to GACC so I look for Howells-Dodge to have their way with Homer in the ground game.
