COLUMBUS – Columbus Scotus outscored North bend Central 27-7 in the second half, as the Shamrocks beat the Tigers 48-28 in high school football aired on 107.9 The Bull on Friday night, October 2.
NBC started the game with the ball, but went three and out and were forced to punt. Scotus also punted on their first possession of the game.
The Tigers got the ball on their own nine yard line, and finished the long scoring drive on a four-yard pass from Brodey Johnson to Kaden Juhl. The PAT made it 7-0 Tigers with 5:23 in the first.
Scotus answered back in one play, as QB Evan Bock broke loose for a 65-yard scoring run to make it 7-7.
NBC returned the favor however, using a double pass trick play that went from Johnson to Juhl and then to Breckin Peters for the score. The Tigers led 14-7 at the end of the first quarter.
The Shamrocks opened the second quarter with a 98-yard scoring drive that was aided by a 48-yard touchdown run from Bock. The PAT tied the game at 14-14 with 7:30 left in the second.
The Tigers went back on top on their next drive, going 90 yards. The drive was capped by a two-yard run from Ethan Mullally, and NBC led 21-14 with 2:19 left before the half.
Scotus took over at their own 42 with 2:11 to go in the second. They were able to punch it in with 1:10 left on a two-yard run from Bock.
North Bend Central threw an interception as time expired. The game was tied 21-21 at halftime.
The Shamrocks scored on their first two drives of the third quarter, a 10-yard run and a three-yard run, both by Devon Borchers. Scotus led 35-21 with 5:30 in the third.
NBC scored their lone touchdown of the second half with five seconds left in the third quarter, a 24-yard pass from Johnson to Peters. After three quarters, it was Scotus 35, North bend Central 28.
Scotus scored on the first drive of the fourth quarter, a 45-yard pass from Bock to Borchers. The PAT missed, and Scotus led 41-28 with 11:16 in the fourth.
The Tigers punted on their next drive, and Scotus took over at their own 38. That drive was capped off with a three-yard scoring run by Borchers. The PAT made it 48-28 Shamrocks with 7:04 left in the game.
NBC was driving late in the game, but threw another interception on the Scotus side of the field.
The Shamrocks ran out the remaining 3:49 to claim the 48-28 victory.
Penalties against North Bend Central in the second half played a key factor in their offensive struggles.
Johnson was 31-38 for 284 yards passing with three touchdowns and two interceptions. Kaden Juhl went 2-2 for 55 yards and a score. Peters made 6 catches for 124 yards, and scored twice. Mullally ran the ball 15 times for 103 yards, and scored once while also hauling in 6 passes for 78 yards.
Allan Oreallana made 9 tackles while Virka and Peters had 8 and 7, respectively.
Head Coach Ryan Stieren says it was a tale of two halfs. "We knew we were going to have to outscore them and we were on track to do that in the first half but they really took it to us in the second half. It's been a tough 3 weeks for our program so I am proud of our fight. I am so happy that we got the opportunity to compete tonight."
North Bend Central is now 3-2 on the year and will host Columbus Lakeview (1-5) Friday night.
The Vikings lost 55-20 at home to West Point-Beemer this past Friday night.
Lakeview has really struggled in their last two games, but the Tigers struggled against the Shamrocks.
NBC really cannot afford to lose this game with road games at West Point-Beemer and Battle Creek to end the regular season.
The Tigers desperately need to get back on track and put last week's setback behind them.
I think not playing Schuyler cause of COVID-19 really set North Bend Central back.
That and you add in the fact you were getting a hungry and motivated Scotus team coming off of a loss at West Point-Beemer the week before.
I think the Tigers will find a way to bounce and get back on track this week though, and pick up a big win.
The Vikings could provide a tough and stingy challenge despite their record so North Bend Central has to be ready and prepared to play come Friday night.
