BRLD upsets Fremont Bergan

The BRLD Football Team upset Fremont Bergan 20-14 at home Friday night.

The Wolverines led 6-0 at the end of the 1st quarter, and won the 2nd quarter 8-7 to take a 14-7 lead into the locker room.

BRLD blanked the Knights 6-0 in the 3rd quarter to extend the lead to 20-7 at the end of the 3rd.

Bergan shutout the Wolverines 7-0 in the 4th quarter, but it wasn't enough.

Will Gatzemeyer was 10-16 passing for 114 yards and a touchdown while running the ball 18 times for 59 yards, and scoring once.

Jacob Zuhlke ran the ball 28 times for 100 yards, and punched it in the end zone once.

Head Coach Dan Maresh says Gatzemeyer and Zuhlke's performances are a testament to them and their teammates. "Will has done a great job in the off-season developing himself into an all around QB. The running part came easy for him but he wanted to work on his passing game and spent a lot of time working on his mechanics. Against Bergan he did a great job knowing where we needed to go with the football. Jacob Zuhlke has shown a lot of toughness this season and has been able to get us the tough yards we have needed last few weeks. He has been a steady performer for us the last two years. Both Will and Jacob have benefited from the development of the offensive line as the season has gone on. Each week they are getting better and better and are setting the tone for our offense."

Derek Petersen and Lucas Vogt made 10 tackles apiece while Tyler Kroger and Zuhlke totaled 9 and 7, respectively.

BRLD amassed 279 yards of total offense, including 165 on the ground.

The defense gave up 151 yards of total offense, including 129 rushing.

Maresh on what the win means for his program. "Hopefully it shows our program that we can compete with some of the better teams in C2. With the co-op being so young it was hard for our kids to understand their potential and how they fit in with the C2 landscape and all the competitive football that is played in this area."

The Wolverines (4-4) take on Logan View (5-3) on the road Friday night.

The Raiders won last year's game 49-48.

Maresh says his team would simply like to end the year with a W. "All we are looking to do is end the season with a winning record against a program that has had a fantastic season. They are a well coached team that has won some hard fought, physical games. If we could get a win against them it would again show the kids that this program can be very successful moving forward."

Two players BRLD will have to really key on and try and slow down are Jacob Polk and Brady Hull. "It will be a big challenge all night trying to slow down that 1, 2, punch. They compliment each other very well and it doesn't take much for them to turn a well defended play into a big play for them. We are going to have to play assignment football and rally to the ball carrier because it takes more than one player to bring them down," Maresh said.

The Wolverines have won 4 out of their last 5 after starting the season 0-3.

Maresh credits leadership, confidence and experience as things that have allowed BRLD to play better in the 2nd half of the season.

I think this is going to be a great game.

Two great quarterbacks and running backs going up against one another with a chance for Logan View to go to the playoffs.

I'm sure the Wolverines would love nothing more than to go into Logan View and leave with a win.

BRLD has to be thinking if we're not going to the playoffs neither are you.

That has to be the Wolverines' mentality the entire game.

BRLD has already proven they are better in the 2nd year of the Co-op despite losing a lot of good players to graduation last year.

I think the growth and development the Wolverines have displayed all season is a testament to hard work by the players and excellent coaching.

Both BRLD and Logan View are very well coached teams, and I have a lot of respect for both programs.

I'm sure the two programs have a lot of respect for each other as well.

It should be a fun and exciting High School Football Game. I expect both teams to play very, very well.
