Howells-The Howells-Dodge Football team remained unbeaten with a resounding 58-22 home win over Elgin Public/Pope John Friday night.
The Jaguars' Jordon Brichacek returned the opening kickoff 70 yards for a touchdown to put Howells-Dodge up 7-0. Luke Rocheford then scored on a 58-yard punt return with just over 10 minutes left in the 1st quarter, and just like that Howells-Dodge led it 16-0.
Dylan Horejsi scored from 48 yards out with 6:23 remaining in the opening period to give the Jaguars a 22-0 lead.
Rocheford returned another punt for a touchdown, this time from 53 yards out, at the 5:10 mark of the 1st quarter, to make it a 30-0 game in favor of Howells-Dodge.
Rocheford scored his third touchdown of the game at the 3:39 mark of the 1st quarter, returning an interception 45 yards to the house to give the Jaguars a 38-0 advantage.
It became a 46-0 game early in the 2nd quarter when Horejsi scored from 56 yards out for Howells-Dodge.
Darrrin Pokorny got into the act with 7:27 left to go in the second quarter, scoring from 7 yards out on a run, and the Jaguars went up 52-0.
Josh Brester scored from 60 yards out with 2:45 left to go until halftime for Howells-Dodge to make it a 58-0 game.
Hunter Reestman scored on the final play of the 1st half to get the Wolfpack on the scoreboard, and the Jaguars led 58-8 at the break.
Reestman connected with Kyle Schumacher for a 25-yard touchdown pass with 6:25 remaining in the 3rd quarter, and it became a 58-16 game.
The final points of the game were scored in the 4th quarter when Reestman connected with Schumacher again, this time from 14 yards out.
Horejsi had 104 yards rushing on two carries with two touchdowns for Howells-Dodge while Josh Brester had 3 carries for 59 yards, and a touchdown.
Carter Jensen notched 14 tackles while Brester totaled 13. Trevor Schumacher registered 9 while Jon Yosten and Carter Throener contributed 8 apiece.
The Jaguars totaled 232 yards of offense, all on the ground.
Elgin Public/Pope John had 264 yards of total offense, including 177 rushing.
Head Coach Mike Speirs says his team was effective on both sides of the ball. "Yeah our first unit as a unit only got two plays, and they executed really well on those plays, so we were really pleased with what we saw there. And defensively, other than a couple times where we had some younger kids maybe not fulfill their assignment quite like we'd like everything else, we were pretty happy with the effort."
Howells-Dodge (5-0) is at Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family (2-3) Friday night. "Bill Mimick's coaching them. I just read the other day that his 42nd year. So you can't fool him. He's seen everything that can happen. And he always gets kids to play hard. They play physical, they'll play tough. So it's going to be a physical battle. We're going to have to really be prepared for a lot of things they do unique offensively. And you know you're going to get a great effort out of them, and so we've got to try and match that effort," Speirs said.
The Bulldogs won 80-34 at High Plains Community Friday night.
Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family started the season 0-3, but has won two in a row.
This figures to be a challenging contest for the Jaguars.
Howells-Dodge needs to have a first half like they did against the Wolfpack.
If the Jaguars play like they did in the first half of Friday night's game for four quarters this coming Friday night, then there's no stopping Howells-Dodge.
The Jaguars are getting better with each passing week, and I think the best is still ahead for Howells-Dodge.
This certainly has an opportunity to be a state championship year for the Jaguars, but Howells-Dodge has to come out and take care of business against Humphrey/Lindsay Holy Family, Homer, and Clarkson/Leigh before the playoffs arrive.
I would say these next three contests are going to be tougher than anything the Jaguars have faced this year with the exception of East Butler.
Howells-Dodge could have some battles on their hands the next few weeks so the Jaguars have to be ready to rock and roll from the start.
The start to last week's game was picture perfect. You couldn't of asked for a better half of football if you are Howells-Dodge.
Now it's a matter of the Jaguars building on that play, and turning in an even better performance Friday night.
Howells-Dodge has to be ready to dominate in all facets of the game like the Howells and Dodge teams of old.
The Jaguars have to come out and take it to the Bulldogs on both sides of the ball, and make life difficult on Ashton Dohmen, and others.
Howells-Dodge has to turn in a complete, four quarter game to ensure the win I would say.
