Stanton falls at Ponca
The Stanton Football Team lost 48-6 at Ponca on Saturday.
The Indians led 20-0 after one, and won the 2nd quarter 14-6 to take a 34-6 lead into the locker room.
Ponca shutout the Mustangs 14-0 in the 3rd quarter to make up the final score as neither team scored in the 4th quarter.
Marcus Spotanski was 4-15 passing for 70 yards and two interceptions. Beau Wilke made 2 receptions for 73 yards.
Gauge Erickson made a team-high 9 tackles while Wilke totaled 8.
Stanton racked up 286 yards of offense, including 171 rushing.
I thought the Mustangs made some nice strides offensively. Stanton just has to work on slowing down teams' offenses, and putting more points up on the board.
The Mustangs (2-5) host Hartington Cedar Catholic (7-0) Friday night.
The Trojans won 12-0 at home over Crofton this past Friday night.
I know the weather was bad last week, but Stanton only lost 15-8 to the Warriors so perhaps this game will be closer than some think.
Cedar Catholic has a huge showdown with Ponca next week, but the Trojans have to worry about and focus on the Mustangs first.
This is Stanton's last home game. The last time the seniors will ever play on their home field.
The Mustangs are out of playoff contention so it's all about playing for school pride at this point.
Stanton has to come out and play inspired and motivated. I really think the Mustangs will do just that.
These kids are battling hard I'm sure, Stanton just hasn't seen the same results that they're used to.
It has been an unStanton like year you could say, but that doesn't mean this game doesn't matter and that the kids don't care.
There's still a lot for the Mustangs to play for.
A chance to knock off Cedar Catholic from the ranks of the unbeaten and win your last home game of the season should be motivating enough.
Stanton has to get jacked and fired up for this one. The Mustangs have to be ready to bring the lunch pail and hit hard and play smasmouth light you up football.
Stanton has to try their best to give the Trojans a taste of their own medicine.
The Mustangs need to be physical and must take the fight to Cedar Catholic.
The defense has to try and slow down the Trojans' running game and create turnovers.
Cedar Catholic is a lot like Ponca so Stanton could lose in a landslide, but I could also see the Mustangs competing and keeping things close with the Trojans.
I think it depends on if Stanton's offense can score points and if the defense can bog down Cedar Catholic at all.
