The following is a recap and quote from Head Coach Ryan Stieren.
We scored on our first play of the game on a double pass from Kaden Juhl to Breckin Peters for 85 yards. On the next kickoff, we recovered a pooch kick and scored 4 plays later on a 1 yard Ethan Mullally run putting us up 14-0 before they had possession of the ball. Early in the 2nd quarter we scored again on a 32 yard pass from Brodey Johnson to Colin Rhynalds making it 21-0. Late in the 1st half, we drove 80 yards but could not finish the drive and missed a field goal attempt to end the half.
On the first drive of the 2nd half, Fort Calhoun scored on a 49-yard run, making it 21-6. We answered with a 50-yard drive that stalled inside the 20. Late in the 3rd quarter, Breckin Peters lined up in the wildcat and scored on 29-yard run putting the game at 28-6.
Early in the 4th quarter, Fort Calhoun scored on an 8-play drive to get within 28-13 but we answered on the next drive on a 5 yard run by Ethan Mullally capping a 12 play 65 yard drive to put us up 35-13. On their next possession an errant snap with out of the end zone and we got a safety to complete the scoring and making the final score to be 37-13.
Brodey Johnson was 20-25 passing for 231 yards and 1 TD. Breckin Peters caught 8 passes for 140 yards and a Touchdown. He also had 1 carry for 29 yards and a TD. Ethan Mullally rushed 25 times for 131 yards and 2 TDs. Defensively, we were led by Ian Virka with 7 solo tackles and 2 more assisted tackles. Also, Jace Owen had 5 solo tackles and 2 assisted tackles.
The Tigers had 348 yards of total offense, including 316 through the air while giving up 239 yards of total offense, including 165 on the ground.
"I feel that we played extremely well for our first time out against a tough opponent. We got off to a great start and then controlled the rest of the game. Offensively we had a good amount of explosive plays but also put together a couple long drives. Defensively we were pretty much lights out as they really only had 1 sustained drive to score, their other score was on a long run where we got out of position. I think we need to work on finishing drives and continuing to execute our job on defense. All in all, we are pleased with our start to this season."
North Bend Central (1-0) takes on Arlington (0-1) on the road Friday night.
The Eagles lost 37-22 at West Point-Beemer last week.
I look for this game to go similar to the way the Fort Calhoun game did.
I was really impressed with the Tigers in the first game of the season, and echo Coach Stieren's comments and thought NBC played exceptional football and really well.
The Tigers have to continue to improve and get better though, and must continue to perform at a high level.
North Bend Central has to keep it up and keep doing what they've been doing.
The Tigers have to stay humble, continue to work hard, and keep playing with lots of pride and passion.
NBC has to go into Arlington and dominate the way they did at home against the Pioneers in the season opener.
The Tigers have to perform well on the road this week and prove they can win and win big on the road as they travel to Pierce next week.
North Bend Central has to be careful not to overlook the Eagles either though.
The Tigers have to go out there with a chip on their shoulder and something to prove Friday night.
NBC has to prove to themselves that they can get it done on the road against a good program, especially given the fact that Pierce isn't an easy place to win or play.
