Clarkson/Leigh loses season opener to Cross County

In a battle of the top two teams in Class D-1 Friday night, it was Cross County who came out on top against Clarkson/Leigh as the Cougars won 56-36 in a game played in Leigh.

Cross County got up 14-6 at the end of one, and won the 2nd quarter 12-8 to take a 26-14 lead into the locker room.

The Cougars outscored the Patriots 14-8 in the 3rd quarter, extending their lead to 40-22 at the end of three.

Cross County won the 4th quarter 16-14.

Lance Paprocki had 25 carries for 132 yards and two touchdowns while Tommy McEvoy carried the ball 20 times for 107 yards and two scores. Paprocki was 6-11 passing for 71 yards.

Trevor Zulkoski had 7 tackles.

Clarkson/Leigh had 381 yards of total offense, 310 coming on the ground.

I have to admit I was surprised by this score. I was expecting more out of the Patriots in this one.

Clarkson/Leigh (0-1) travels down to Elmwood Friday night to take on Elmwood-Murdock (1-0).

The Knights won 43-6 at home over Mead Friday night.

Elmwood-Murdock is a traditional football powerhouse, and winning on their home field will not be easy for the Patriots.

McEvoy has to be more explosive than he was in the opener, and the Patriots have to shore some things up defensively.

Clarkson/Leigh had a lot of hype coming into this season, but could easily be looking at an 0-2 start.

The Patriots hope they can avoid that, and I do too, but winning at Elmwood doesn't figure to be easy whatsoever.

Clarkson/Leigh simply has to be better than they were last week.

Cross County is a great team, but the Patriots had no business losing that one the way they did.

The good news is this Friday night is a new game and a new week so we will see what happens.
