Emerson-Hubbard drops opener to Homer

The Emerson-Hubbard Football Team lost 52-18 at Homer to open up the season last Friday night.

The Knights went up 27-6 after one, and outscored the Pirates 13-6 in the 2nd quarter to take a 40-12 lead into the locker room.

Homer shutout Emerson-Hubbard 12-0 in the 3rd quarter to extend their lead to 52-12 at the end of three.

The Pirates blanked the Knights 6-0 in the 4th quarter.

Nolan Belt had 134 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries while Anthony Lawrence ran the ball 18 times for 84 yards, and scored once.

Belt had 15 tackles while Zach Shanks and Cameron Ahlers totaled 8 apiece. Hunter Schock and Garrett Blanke notched 7 each.

Emerson-Hubbard had 270 yards of total offense, including 230 on the ground.

The defense surrendered 396 yards of total offense, 280 coming on the ground.

The Pirates had 4 turnovers. That along with giving up what they did on defense spelled doom for Emerson-Hubbard.

The Pirates (0-1) host Allen (1-0) Friday night.

The Eagles won 44-6 at home over Cedar Bluffs last Friday night.

Allen is a very good team, and beating them doesn't figure to be easy.

I was shocked and in disbelief when I saw Homer beat Emerson-Hubbard so perhaps the Pirates will be able to beat the Eagles this week.

Of course these two teams could be combined with Wakefield at this time next year so it will be interesting to see how that affects play Friday night if at all.

The next two weeks are going to be tough for Emerson-Hubbard with Plainview next week.

So the Pirates have to play better than they did against Homer if they want to come out on top the next couple of weeks.

Emerson-Hubbard has to be better defensively and has to limit turnovers.

The Pirates have to protect the rock and take care of the ball.

Emerson-Hubbard has to be better on both sides of the ball there's no other way to put it.

The Pirates can definitely be better too.

I expected Emerson-Hubbard to come out guns a blazin' and start this season with a bang, but instead they lost big.

So not the start to the season most were expecting, but the good news is there's a long season and a long ways yet to go.

The Pirates have to forget about last week and right the ship this week so to speak.

Emerson-Hubbarrd has to regroup and play better this week and hold themselves more accountable.
