Tekamah-Herman routs Ponca to open season
The Tekamah-Herman Football Team went up to Ponca and blasted the Indians 42-12 Friday night.
The Tigers led 8-0 at the end of one, and outscored Ponca 22-6 in the 2nd quarter to lead 30-6 at halftime.
Tekamah-Herman extended their lead to 36-6 at the end of three before both teams scored 6 points in the 4th quarter.
Luke Wakehouse had 183 yards rushing on 18 carries, including three touchdowns while Clay Beaumont had 139 yards rushing on 11 carries, and scored once.
Head Coach Graig McElmuray says those two have come a long ways. "Luke is a good runner and solid football player. Clay has become better at making decisions with the ball. These two have really matured so much in the past 10 games."
Kody Bitter had 12 tackles while Cole Bottger made 10. Garrison Potadle had 7.
The Tigers had 449 yards of total offense, including 433 rushing. Wow!!!!
433 yards rushing against Ponca is an amazing feat!!!!
McElmuray says it's good to know that their hard work is paying off. "It felt good to know that our young men worked hard to make this happen and that they gave great effort to flip the script so to speak."
McElmuray was also pleased with his team's defense. "I was really happy with the way our defense played. Giving up 6 points through the first three quarters of play is a huge step in the right direction for our program."
Tekamah-Herman (1-0) hosts Stanton (0-1) Friday night.
The Mustangs lost 19-12 at home to David City last week.
It appears Stanton is pretty solid defensively, but struggles on offense.
I think if the Tigers can put up similar numbers rushing next week then they will put themselves in a great position to win again.
McElmuray says the triple option has allowed his team to flourish. "We installed the triple option this past season. Our kids at every level in high school are becoming familiar and accustomed to playing fast and hard. We play so much faster then we have in the past."
That would explain why Tekamah-Herman ran the ball so well against Ponca.
The triple option is very difficult to defend.
McElmuray says his team looks forward to playing the Mustangs. "Our guys are excited to play the game and they are excited to have a great opponent like Stanton to open our Home Schedule."
He adds execution is critical in this one. "One of the biggest keys to winning any game is execution. The team that executes better in every phase of the game Friday night will win."
I think the Tigers not only have a chance to win Friday night, but win big.
Tekamah-Herman very well could be one of the more complete surprise and feel good stories of the season.
I know it's just one game, but the way the Tigers took it to Ponca on their home field last week is really saying something.
Tekamah-Herman doesn't want to get too ahead of themselves, but I really feel the Tigers have a chance to start the season 4-0.
Tekamah-Herman has to take things one game at a time, but if the Tigers play the way they did against the Indians each and every week this year then they're going to win a lot of football games.
I feel the sky is the limit for Tekamah-Herman and what they can do this year.
This season has a chance to be very magical for the Tigers, and another win over Stanton on Friday would be another huge step in the right direction for this program.
I'm excited to see what Tekamah-Herman can do and how much farther they can go Friday night.
