North Bend Central downs Johnson County Central in opener

Friday night, North Bend Central defeated Johnson County Central on the road by a score of 32-21.

The Tigers scored on 3 of their first 4 possessions to take a 19-0 lead. After that they ran into a rut and could not get anything going the rest of the half and had to punt on their last two full possessions. On the 2nd punt, NBC missed a blocking assignment and the Punter got tackled for a 12 yard loss resulting in a turnover deep in Tiger territory. The Thunderbirds scored on the short field making it 19-7 going into the half. Defensively, North Bend Central only gave up 58 yards in the first half.

The second half was similar to the end of the first half. NBC scored right away on an efficient drive and then couldn't get anything going for periods of time while making another special teams mistake (high snap on a punt) and giving them great field position. Defensively, the Tigers played pretty well but gave up QB scrambles of 17 yards, 18 yards, and 24 yards, all of which NBC had guys there to make a play but couldn't finish the play. North Bend Central also gave up 2 big pass plays, one for 41 yards and another for 34 yards.

Austin Endorf was 19-27 passing for 168 yards with 3 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. Breckin Peters hauled in 11 passes for 118 yards and scored 3 times. Ethan Mullaly ran the ball 16 times for 107 yards and scored twice.

Mullaly and Gavin Peterson made 7 tackles apiece.

North Bend Central amassed 297 yards of total offense, including 168 passing. The defense gave up 246 yards of total offense, 173 coming through the air.

North Bend Central Head Coach Ryan Stieren says his team's play was up and down. "This was one of those unusual games where you are in control of the game the whole time but things aren't clicking. All 3 phases (offense, defense, special teams) were dominant at moments but all 3 phases were also inconsistent and made major errors. I was really excited with how we started the game offensively and how we played defense. But I am not excited about giving up big plays on defense when we had opportunities to finish the play for a big loss. Also, we must be more consistent on offense and special teams. We will make a big jump this week."

The Tigers (1-0) host Logan View/Scribner-Snyder (0-1) Friday night.

The Raiders lost 16-15 at home to Fremont Bergan last week.

I feel North Bend Central will need to play a much better game this week than they did last week to come out on top.

LVSS is a C-1 foe, and I feel the Raiders are a stronger and more physical team than the Thunderbirds were.

The win over Johnson County Central was solid, but the Tigers are going to need to be more dominant this week to come out on top I feel.

Endorf needs to have a big game with his arm and Mullaly needs a big game running the ball as well.

NBC is at their best when they have offensive balance, and they had that last week.

The defense has room for improvement, and I think they have a chance to get on track this week.

The Raiders couldn't quite get over the hump against the Knights on Friday, and I think a similar thing could happen against the Tigers Friday night.

North Bend Central has to defend their home field and play good, consistent football.

The Tigers need more of a complete game effort than they got against the Thunderbirds.

The good news is the season opener was a win for North Bend Central, and now the Tigers have something to build off of.

I think there's a big difference between winning that first game and dropping the season opener.

You set the tone for the season and get things started off on the right foot when you win.

NBC now has something to build off of heading into this week while LVSS is still searching for answers.

So I feel like the Tigers are one step ahead of the Raiders right now, and feel that gives them a good chance to win Friday night.

That and North Bend Central is at home so that should help them out and be to their advantage as well.

The Tigers won last year's game 30-7 on the road so we'll see what NBC can do in this year's game.
