Stanton uses big second half to down Tekamah-Herman

The Stanton Football Team won 22-6 at Tekamah-Herman Friday night.

The Tigers led 6-0 at halftime, but the Mustangs put up 8 points in the 3rd quarter to go up 8-6 after three and notched 14 4th quarter points to make up the final score.

Parker Krusemark was 4-5 passing for 129 yards, targeting Trey Elbert 2 times for 68 yards and Sutton Pohlman 2 times for 54 yards.

Pohlman had 101 yards rushing on 13 carries, and scored once. Gage Tighe had 82 yards rushing on 14 carries, and scored twice.

Polhman made 13 tackles while Mason Bruggemann had 9. Ben Wilke had 8 while Damien Erickson made 7.

Stanton had 374 yards of total offense, 245 coming on the ground.

The defense gave up 211 yards of total offense, including 114 through the air.

Head Coach David Stoddard says it was a total team effort. "It was a great team effort, The offensive line and TE’s did a great job for four quarters. Trey Elbert, Jordan Gartner, Jackson Benson, Mason Bruggeman, Ben Wilke, Thomas Cunningham, Christian Flood, Matt Reese, Brennan Wragge, and Nathan Wragge all rotated in up front. Parker Krusemark was very efficient in the passing game, and Sutton Pohlman, Gage Tighe, and Jason Claussen ran the ball well, and continued to make plays. Junior Trey Elbert had two big pass receptions as well to keep second half drives going."

Stoddard adds his team was well prepared. "Our team and staff worked very hard in the off-season, therefore we wanted to come out after a week one setback to very good David City team and continue the process of getting better in all areas. The team prepared thoroughly throughout the week and did a good job getting into their scouting reports and fully understanding the game-plan in all three phases. We knew that we had to have a great week of practice before playing a tough team like Tekamah-Herman."

Stoddard says his team finished in the 2nd half.  "We felt very good about the game-plan going into halftime, we had some good drives going in the first half, but miscues along the way proved to be costly. We knew if we took care of the football in the second half and followed the rules of our offense and played assignment football on defense, that we would have the opportunity to put some promising drives together. In the second half we took care of the football and did a good job of finishing drives."

Stanton (1-1) plays host to North Bend Central (2-0) Friday night.

The Tigers blasted Logan View/Scribner-Snyder 34-6 at home last week.

The Tekamah-Herman win was solid, but a win over North Bend Central would be even bigger and more impressive.

The Tigers feature Quarterback Austin Endorf, and their offense is tough to stop.

I feel like the Mustangs will need the same kind of effort on both sides of the ball that they got against Tekamah-Herman.

Stoddard says his team is slowly learning how to win. "Every win is a good one, the team is understanding a little more each week the importance of process and preparation. This Friday we play a very talented and well coached North Bend Central team. We will continue to work hard and play assignment football, as we saw the success that can be achieved by doing the proper things well with great energy and effort."

So Stanton knows the potential is there and that they have the potential and opportunity to be successful.

The Mustangs just have to put it all together again Friday night, and pull a shocker.

Stanton has back-to-back home games against North Bend Central and Fremont Bergan to close out non-district play, and wins over those two teams heading into district play would be huge.

The Mustangs just have to finish drives the entire game Friday night to be able to win, in my opinion.

Stanton also has to try and slow down Endorf and North Bend Central's passing game.

I thought Stanton did an excellent job stopping the run last week, and will need to do that again this week as well to be successful.

I look for Stanton to put up a huge fight and perhaps win.

I felt the Mustangs took a lot of steps forward last week, and look for Stanton to do the same again this week.

I feel this is an improving team and a team on the rise, and the Mustangs have to step up and rise up to the occasion Friday night.
