Winnebago loses on last second field goal to Pender
The Winnebago Football Team lost 37-36 at home to Pender Friday night on a last second field goal.
The Indians led 8-0 at the end of one and the game was tied at 22 at halftime.
Winnebago led 30-28 at the end of three before the Pendragons won the 4th quarter 9-6 to make up the final score.
The Indians gave up 247 yards of total offense, including 218 on the ground.
Tough loss and a tough pill to swallow for Winnebago no doubt.
The Indians (0-1) host Lutheran High Northeast (0-0) Friday night.
This is the Eagles' season opener.
LHNE is a very tough team, and Winnebago is going to need to play a great game to come out on top.
I would say the Eagles are better than the Pendragons so the Indians are going to need to play really well for sure.
The thing Winnebago can't do is come out and lay an egg just because of what happened last week.
A loss like that can be difficult to overcome, there's no doubt about it, but the Indians have to put it past them and move on.
Winnebago has to regroup and get ready for a tough Lutheran High Northeast team.
The Indians have to get fired and geared up to defend their home field once again.
Winnebago has to treat this game as a big playoff type game for themselves since they don't get a taste of the actual postseason.
The schedule doesn't appear easy for the Indians the rest of the way given the resurgence of Laurel-Concord-Coleridge and the emergence of Homer.
That simply means Winnebago has to step up their game.
The Indians played pretty well against Pender for the most part I thought, they just had a tough break go their way.
But I think seeing that they can hang and compete with a quality team they have beaten before will help Winnebago the rest of this season.
The Indians have to shore things up defensively and play another good game on offense against the Eagles.
I think having already played a game is a good thing and an advantage for Winnebago over LHNE.
The Eagles haven't played a game yet, and I think working out those first game kinks and mishaps and issues will allow the Indians to play well this week given the time they've had to cleanup any mistakes they might have made against the Pendragons.
Will it result in a Winnebago win? I think it can, but that remains to be seen.
