Clarkson/Leigh drops opener against Howells-Dodge
The Clarkson/Leigh Football Team lost 34-16 at home to Howells-Dodge in the season opener on Friday, August 24th.
The Jaguars led 6-0 after one and shutout the Patriots 14-0 in the 2nd quarter to take a 20-0 lead into the locker room. The third quarter saw Howells-Dodge outscore Clarkson/Leigh 14-8 and extend their lead to 34-8 at the end of three. The Patriots blanked the Jaguars 8-0 in the 4th quarter.
Lance Paprocki was 7-10 passing for 83 yards with a touchdown. Tommy McEvoy carried the rock 13 times for 88 yards and made a team-high 11 tackles.
The Patriots amassed 240 yards of total offense, including 157 on the ground. The defense surrendered 329 yards, 199 of them rushing.
Tough loss to start the season for Clarkson/Leigh. I felt the Patriots were very competitive though.
Clarkson/Leigh (0-1) has another tough game this week, batting Humphrey St. Francis (1-0) on the road on Friday night.
The Flyers won 80-36 at Wynot last week.
As good as Howells-Dodge is, I feel Humphrey St. Francis is better.
The Flyers appear to be very stout and dynamic offensively, and that could spell doom for the Patriots.
Clarkson/Leigh had a tough time slowing down the Jaguars so hopefully the Patriots have come up with a game plan to slow down and stop Humphrey St. Francis.
The non-district schedule is very tough for Clarkson/Leigh, but the Patriots have to use these tough games as opportunities to get better before district play starts.
Clarkson/Leigh can't head into this game with the Flyers and think they are defeated.
The Patriots have to go in there with a hard nosed attitude and winning mindset, and expect to win.
To be the best you have to beat the best, and that has to be something Clarkson/Leigh is thinking of or has already thought of.
The Patriots may not win, but if they don't they can at least go down swinging.
Clarkson/Leigh can't back down from Humphrey St. Francis at all.
The Patriots may not have a lot of kids out for the team this year, but Clarkson/Leigh is still mighty.
The Patriots have to be at their best with their backs against the wall, and have this us against the world attitude.
No one besides the players, coaches, parents, and fans believe Clarkson/Leigh can win perhaps so the Patriots have to go out there and do their best to prove everyone wrong.
That's much easier said than done, especially on the road, but anything can happen on any given Friday.
Clarkson/Leigh has to believe and must play like they expect to win.
The Patriots have to get off to a strong start and set the tone early.
Smacking the Flyers in the mouth and putting up something like a quick 14 points might get things kick started for Clarkson/Leigh.
If the Patriots can avoid getting blown out in all 4 quarters they may have a chance to win or at least keep things close.
