Stanton drops game to Battle Creek
The Stanton Football Team lost 49-20 at home to Battle Creek Friday night.
The Mustangs led 7-6 after one, but things got away from Stanton in the 2nd quarter as the Braves outscored them 23-7 to take a 29-14 lead into the locker room.
Battle Creek shutout the Mustangs 13-0 in the 3rd quarter to extend their lead to 42-14 at the end of three.
The Braves won the 4th quarter 7-6.
Marcus Spotanski was 6-16 passing for 102 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. Gage Tighe ran the ball 3 times for 68 yards.
Sutton Pohlman made 15 tackles while Ben Wilke and Issiah Borgmann racked up 9 and 7, respectively.
Stanton amassed 263 yards of total offense, 161 coming on the ground. The Mustangs gave up 485 yards of total offense, including 412 rushing.
The run defense has to improve for Stanton if they want to knock off some of these good teams on their schedule.
The Mustangs (2-3) take on Crofton (0-5) on the road Friday night.
The Warriors lost 49-9 at Norfolk Catholic this past Friday.
This is a scary and dangerous game for Stanton, in my opinion.
I realize Crofton has had a long and difficult season, but it would not shock me to see the Warriors up for this one.
Crofton is known for their strong running game and it would not shock me to see the Warriors have some success running the football against the Mustangs.
I can definitely see Stanton coming out of there with a win, but I have a sneaky suspicion Crofton will be up for this one.
I could be wrong and the Mustangs could roll, but I don't feel that's going to be easy for Stanton to do.
Pohlman needs to step up and have a huge game for the Mustangs, and Spotanski has to be effective and must take care of the ball.
Stanton has to get fired up and must be physical in trying to stop the run.
The Mustangs have to come storming out of the gates and must fire off the ball.
Stanton has to be ready for a good physical battle and a four quarter game.
I feel the Warriors are a better team than their record indicates so the Mustangs better be prepared.
I think if Stanton wins this one they've got a shot to win 2 out of their last 3 regular season games and go 5-4 and perhaps sneak into the playoffs given their tough schedule.
It's a lot to ask for and a tall task no doubt, but definitely possible.
The Mustangs have to worry about beating Crofton Friday night though.
A loss to the Warriors all but officially eliminates Stanton from playoff contention.
So in a way it's do or die for the Mustangs Friday night.
Stanton has to come out and play with a sense of urgency and purpose, and must be ready for a lot of hard hitting.
This is one of those games where both teams could end up bruised and battered after it's all said and done with.
