Emerson-Hubbard uses big second half to propel past Homer in opener
The Emerson-Hubbard Football Team won their season opener over Homer on Friday, August 24th, 57-26 at home.
The game was tied at 6 at the end of one before the Pirates won the 2nd quarter 16-12 to take a 22-18 lead into the locker room.
Emerson-Hubbard erupted in the 3rd quarter, outscoring the Knights 28-8 to go up 50-26 at the end of three.
The Pirates blanked Homer 7-0 in the 4th quarter.
The Knights racked up 330 yards of total offense, including 176 through the air.
Good win and a good second half from Emerson-Hubbard, but there is work to be done on the defensive side of the ball no doubt.
The Pirates (1-0) take on Allen (1-0) on the road Friday.
The Eagles won 70-6 at Cedar Bluffs Week 1.
Kyle Smith appears to be the one Emerson-Hubbard will need to key on and try and slow down.
He had 227 yards rushing and 4 touchdowns in the win over the Wildcats.
The Pirates will need to do better on him than Cedar Bluffs did if they want to win there's no doubt about that.
Both teams had a bye week so there's no real advantage there for either team.
It's hard to know what to make of this game because I feel the Wildcats are a little down this year, but yet how good is Allen?
Homer used to be a C-2 school so I would say they are definitely the tougher of the two opponents each team faced in Week 1.
The Eagles beat the Pirates 44-40 in Emerson last year so this should be a dandy once again this year.
The Pirates have to go hard in practice the rest of this week, and get geared and amped up for the game.
The loss to Allen last year knocked Emerson-Hubbard out of the playoffs last year if I'm not mistaken so you know payback will be on the Pirates' mind this year.
These two teams have had some pretty good battles the last couple of years, and I don't expect this year to be any different.
This should be a good game as I feel things could go either way.
I think it boils down to turnovers, penalties, big plays, and tackling.
Whoever executes the best and makes the fewest mistakes is most likely going to win you would think.
If Emerson-Hubbard can get this one they very well could be undefeated through the first half of the season.
This season has a chance to be really special for the Pirates, they just have to keep improving each week and must focus on one game and one opponent at a time.
Look for a high scoring affair in Emerson on Friday.
