Pender knocks off Homer
The Pender Football Team picked up a big win at Homer Friday night, winning 54-38.
The Pendragons jumped out to a 34-0 lead at the end of one before the Knights tripled up Pender 24-8 in the 2nd quarter to make it a 42-24 game at halftime.
The Pendragons shutout Homer 12-0 in the 3rd quarter to go up 54-24 at the end of three.
The Knights blanked Pender 14-0 in the 4th quarter.
Caleb Trimble was 8-19 passing for 135 yards with 3 touchdowns and an interception. Jaydon Jump hauled in 4 passes for 59 yards, and scored twice. Jump had 123 yards rushing on 21 carries, including 3 touchdowns. Dylan Vogt carried the ball 12 times for 75 yards, and scored once.
Jump made 9 tackles.
Pender racked up 303 yards of total offense, including 168 on the ground.
Homer rolled up 280 yards of offense, 186 coming on the ground.
Outstanding effort from the Pendragons. I thought Pender responded nicely following the loss to Winnebago.
The Pendragons (1-1) face Randolph (2-0) on the road Friday night.
The Cardinals have been off since Thursday, August 30th when they defeated Plainview 40-8 at home.
Randolph has been off for a while and has had some extra time to prepare for Pender.
The Pendragons have to take advantage of the long layoff for the Cardinals, and get out off to the same kind of start they did against the Knights.
The start of the game for Pender was the difference in their win over Homer. The Knights were never fully able to recover.
The Pendragons got out to a huge lead in that contest and never looked back, and will need to do that again Friday night.
Randolph is a good team, and Pender is going to need to play an exceptional game to come away with the win.
The Pendragons need to get the same kind of offensive production they got last week, and the defense has to give up fewer points as well.
So far I would say defense has hurt Pender this season.
If there's a weakness or Achilles heel for this Pendragon squad I feel it is in their defense.
Pender has to wrap up and make tackles when they have a chance, and limit big plays.
Limiting and/or eliminating turnovers and penalties will be critical for the Pendragons as well, in my opinion.
Pender has to come out and play with purpose and authority, and take the fight to Randolph from start to finish.
The Pendragons have to block well, and instigate things at the point of attack.
Jump needs lanes to run through and Trimble needs lanes to throw through much like they did against Homer.
Pender has to be physical, and must be aggressive up front and take chances to try and create turnovers.
I feel if the Pendragons can play a complete 4 quarter game they'll be right there in the end.
