Stanton loses to Oakland-Craig

The Stanton Mustangs lost what was perhaps the district deciding game to Oakland-Craig Friday night, falling 33-14 at home.

The Knights went up 14-0 at the end of one and scored 6 second quarter points to lead 20-0 at halftime.

Oakland-Craig notched 6 more points in the third quarter to lead 26-0 at the end of three.

Stanton doubled up the Knights 14-7 in the fourth quarter to make up the final score.

Cobin Warnke had 13 rushing attempts for 101 yards. Mitchael Sieh rushed for 75 yards on 11 attempts, and scored once.

Sieh was 4-10 passing for 56 yards with a touchdown.

Mason King led all players with 16 tackles. Grant King had 11 while Dylan Hunt totaled 10. Trey Erbst and Myles Nickolite recorded 9 each while Sieh and Christian Stallbaum had 8 apiece. Warnke notched 7.

The Mustangs amassed 310 yards of offense, including 238 yards rushing.

The defense surrendered 294 yards of offense, 250 coming on the ground.

I was honestly surprised that Stanton lost the way they did. I thought things would be close, and the Mustangs could perhaps win a tight game. It didn't happen that way though. Five lost fumbles definitely didn't help Stanton's cause.

The Mustangs (4-2) look to rebound Friday night when they battle Homer (1-5) on the road.

The Knights lost 56-6 to Wisner-Pilger at home last time out, and have had a difficult season.

Stanton will no doubt be pretty ticked off given what happened last week, and I'm expecting the Mustangs to come out fired up and ready to win big.

I don't think Friday night's game will be very close. Stanton shouldn't have much trouble putting away Homer.

The Mustangs could get challenged early, but again Stanton should be able to roll rather easily. The Mustangs need to come prepared and ready to play though.

Stanton has to play much better than they did against Oakland-Craig.

The Mustangs have been very up and down this year, and it's hard to know what to expect from them, but I think Stanton has a very good chance to win the rest of their games in the regular season and be 7-2 heading into the playoffs.

All Stanton can do now is win out and hope Oakland-Craig drops their final two games.

It's probably not going to happen that way given the fact the Knights won this week's game by forfeit and just have to win next week over Homer to wrap up the district, but the Mustangs can't be thinking that way.

Stanton still has to play like they have a fighting chance at the district, and continue to win to position themselves for a playoff run.

There's still a lot to be accomplished this season, and so the Mustangs need to keep things rolling. A win Friday night would certainly help their cause.
